have a drink?

This is a philosophical film about education, history, and life.

The main line of the film is the story of seven students in a class in a British high school preparing for the Oxbridge exam.

In order to improve the reputation and status of his middle school, the principal of this school organized the best students in the school to set up a Cambridge Oxford class, which is similar to the Tsinghua Peking University class in Chinese high schools, with specialized teachers. It seems that this phenomenon is not a domestic matter, it also exists in other countries.

There are many British universities mentioned in the play, in addition to Cambridge, Oxford two bull schools, as well as Bristol, York, Durham, Sheffeild, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle are about 10-20 very good universities. Of course, it is everyone’s dream to go to Cambridge and Oxford, but just like not everyone can enter Tsinghua University and Peking University, there are many other excellent universities. Their comprehensive strength may not be as good as those two, but some research fields are not. As good and top-notch as they are. Therefore, there is no need to be persistent in choosing, and what suits you is the best.

Regarding the way of education, hector's way is fun and entertaining, and Irwin's way is rigorous, challenging and enlightening. These two methods have their own strengths. Hector's method makes everyone happy to learn, and makes everyone interested in history to learn by themselves; Irwin's method allows everyone to challenge their own thinking and think bravely.

In particular, hector and Irwin are gay. And the way they express it is different. Every time Mr. Hector goes home, he takes a student on the back seat of his motorcycle and touches their dick. This method is quite cute, it seems that every student knows Du Ming, but they don't care, because it's just touching. Irwin did not dare to show any behavior, although he taught his students to be a person who dares to think and do, he did not dare to put it into practice.

A few scenes from the film that stuck in my memory:

There's a good quote from hector about the beauty of reading: The best moment of reading is when you come across something-a thought,a feeling,a way of looking at things ,you thought special ,particular to you. Here it is, sit down by someone else, a person you never met ,may be even someone long dead, and it's like a hand coming out and taking yours. Reading is a conversation between you and the mind of an author you've never met , even dead for many years, and yet you find that you have the same heart on certain issues.

When hector was expelled by the principal, the female colleague's regret was quite philosophical. If the policeman was not on duty that day, if the traffic light was green when crossing the road, and if five minutes passed, each one could produce a different , but why did it happen in the first place? It's not like we in life, if we hadn't done that little thing, clicked on that webpage, hadn't attended that party, hadn't picked up a book, everything would not have been what it is now. However, history is like this. It is made up of these little things, which happened one after another.

Finally, student Dakin asked teacher Irwin, can we have a drink? Having a drink is just a euphemism, and the story behind have a drink is always imaginative. Let's get straight to the point, what I really want is that is there any cirucmstance you suck me off or something similar? Bold and provocative, which I love.

The History Boys quotes

  • [talking about Tom Irwin]

    Headmaster: He comes highly-recommended.

Mrs. Lintott: So did Anne of Cleves.

Headmaster: Who? He's up-to-the-minute, more "now".

Mrs. Lintott: [dryly] Now? I thought history was "then".

  • [Dakin is groping Fiona, using World War I as a metaphor for his "assault" on her body. He moves his hand up her thighs but she pushes it away]

    Dakin: What's the matter?

    Fiona: No-man's land.

Dakin: Ah, fuck. What do I do with this?

    [he points to his erection]

Fiona: Carry out a controlled explosion?
