It's not easy to make a good children's film

By standard parlance, this is a film for young children. But the director didn't think so. It is impossible for children to enjoy a movie alone and only share it with younger children of the same age. They need their parents to accompany them—to watch, to share the plot of the movie, to taste, and to think. Therefore, the high level of children's films is to allow parents to see them too - not only to see them, but also to benefit from watching them and sharing them with their children. There are very few children's movies that can achieve this level.
This movie teaches two things.
The first principle: Childhood can not be deceived. Children have a world of children, a world full of strange things that, to adults, are childish, innocent, but unbelievable; but to children, it is real—not that it is part of the real world , but to say that this children's world affects children's hearts and is closely related to their feelings. So please don't make fun of the kids, please trust the kids. For children, the most lethal effect is not the atomic bomb, but - disbelief and ridicule.
This principle is taught to parents.
The second principle: love your loved ones. Children tend to get stuck in their own world, especially when adults don't believe in themselves. The more imaginative the child, the more likely to withdraw. Because they can't be trusted by adults, the only way they can protect themselves is to close themselves up. At the end of the film, my father said, "I have always been addicted to the fantasy world, while ignoring the relatives around me." I don't know if children can understand this, but the style that has been exaggerated in the film will definitely make children feel to the preciousness of a father's love. To protect children's fantasy world, and at the same time not to let them become withdrawn, there are parents' efforts and the director's good intentions.
This principle is taught to children by the director.

I like the picture of this film. The bright colors are very dreamy, and the dark colors are not gloomy. Although the time setting is modern, the sense of fantasy is full. The elves and monsters inside are more traditional in shape, which is common in Western folklore.

Freddie Highmore, this little pretty boy, is like the current chief child star. This time there is a person who plays two roles. The play is very broad and the future is boundless. It feels good as a fantasy film, but it's still not fantasy enough. That little dwarf is pretty good, but Flower Fairy is a bit evil.

The Spiderwick Chronicles quotes

  • [Jared comes up with a plan to look for Arthur Spiderwick by using a griffin]

Jared Grace: [about Arthur] He had a pet!

Mallory Grace: A pet? And Fluffy the dog is gonna save us?

Jared Grace: It wasn't a dog. It was this, a griffin. 'When I call upon him in the native tongue of the tree elf with whom he dwells, he comes to my assistance.' See? His pet can find him.

Mallory Grace: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Summon a griffin, in native tree elf to find a 125-year-old man who may or may not be alive? That's our plan?

    Jared Grace: Mm-hmm.

Mallory Grace: And you know how to summon a griffin in native tree elf?

Mallory Grace: [Jared turns to the page on how to summon a griffin] Of course.

  • [Thimbletack encourages the kids to ride the griffin to Arthur Spiderwick]

Mallory Grace: What? You want us to ride that beast?

    Thimbletack: He's not a beast. He's a bird. He's a big-boned bird!
