Our hero Fontaine also chose to escape, but he decided to trust a German inmate (roommate) Jost, the former may just be forced, the latter may just be coerced. Some people may say that the original enemy is only cooperating because of the needs of the interests, but what I want to say is that everyone's life is not of equal value? Whether he is a member of the French resistance or a German soldier! So, at the end, when I saw our hero and the German prisoner escape successfully together, I almost burst into tears.
Finally, what I want to say is that Fontaine actually received help from his fellow Frenchmen, both mentally and physically, although they were reluctant to escape with him, to a certain extent, even Do not trust him, (eg: the guy who escaped alone and failed in the end).
This is actually not surprising, because we humans have always been a combination of contradictions.
