Love and hatred within the family

I don't really like Bergman's representative works, such as "The Seventh Seal", "Wild Strawberries", "Fanny and Alexander", etc. I was surprised by Bergman when I first saw "The Virgin Spring" and "Winter Light" , and later watched most of his films on and off, and found that his favorite was Bergman's family ethics.

This autumn sonata reflects the relationship between mother and daughter, and also tells about the relationship between man and self. A star mother of a pianist will naturally devote a lot of time to work and social interaction. She cares very little for her two daughters, and has extremely strict requirements and high expectations, thus causing her daughters to have serious self-doubt and self-denial.

Of course, this movie is a very standard Freudian movie, which is to connect people's psychological problems with their growth experiences. The daughter's misfortune is related to the star mother, and the star mother's lack of love is related to the family she grew up in.

The love-hate relationship within the family, the rage expressed with smiles and politeness, the feeling of spiritual neglect and abandonment, all this is far from us. These icebergs under the sea haven't caught our attention yet. Because our attention is focused on the physical plane. We Chinese have not yet reached the level of civilization to appreciate all this.

But the translation of the film I watched was terrible, with numerous typos and no original subtitles. And the subtitles are delayed by about a minute, which is really a sin, even dare to upload such subtitles.

Love is a precious weakness; hate is a sad weapon.

The only collaboration between two great filmmakers of the same last name, Ingmar Bergman & Ingrid Bergman, the curtain call for Bergman's big-screen performance, is also the first time I've heard her speak her native language almost all the time. Desires to be loved and fears to be loved at the same time, hates and cares at the same time, in fact, the film itself has clearly explained everything. The rich autobiographical film with the dual projections of the director and the starring's respective experiences is the most rare.

Autumn Sonata quotes

  • Eva: There can be no forgiveness.

  • Eva: But one thing I did understand: not a shred of the real me could be loved or accepted. I didn't dare to be myself even when I was alone because I hated what was my own.
