"Prayers for Love" and the Study of Seeds

"Food and Love" is a movie, and the seed is an organism, and there seems to be no intersection between them. But when the heroine LIZ (played by Julia Roberts) sits alone in a Roman ruin that has been abandoned for thousands of years, what she thinks is so similar to the life of a seed.

The film tells the story of a writer who checks out from her bleak marriage. After the divorce, she gives up all her property and goes on the road with ease. In Italy, where the scent of pasta and sausages wafted, she realized her loneliness. In India, where the religious atmosphere was strong, she felt her impetuousness and completed her own prayers and redemption. In the beautiful and passionate Bali, she finally set off again and found Love. This is a dazzling film, filled with scenery, food and culture along the way, like the international version of "Life with a Glass of Wine"; it is also a contemplative film, interspersed with the heroine's feelings about her life. Thinking, famous sayings and aphorisms abound.

When the heroine LIZ walked into the Augusteum (the mausoleum built by Augustus the Great for himself, it was looted by foreign enemies and the ashes of the emperor were stolen; it used to be a castle, a bullring, and a place for storing fireworks, but now it has become a Shelter for the displaced), sitting between empty, quiet and huge buildings, deep in contemplation, thinking about what happened to him. When people face the ancient ruins, they always have a sense of historical vicissitudes, and then compare their own life with it. LIZ is no exception, and feels very much like this ancient building, which has gone through various hardships, and finally is riddled with holes and ruins. But after the world has changed, this thousand-year-old relic is still standing, still glowing with the brilliance of history. In the end, she came to the conclusion that "Ruin is a gift", out of the shadow of fear of change, determined to bravely face the unexpected and eternal changes of the world, and no longer rest on its laurels.

In fact, such a simple truth, nature has long understood before us, and has the courage to practice. Back to the topic of seed research. A seed has to go through rooting, sprouting, flowering, and fruiting, and so on and so forth, not only for thousands of years. Flowering is the most proud and splendid period of a seed. When the flowers wither, sentimental human beings always feel pity, and at the same time lament the passing of their youth. However, the seed does not hold its own flowering period, because it knows that the fruit can only be connected after the flowering period. In the same way, it does not stick to its own fruits, allowing humans and other creatures to eat it, and spread its seeds as far as possible. Sometimes it takes death to be reborn. This is called nature. Since Lao Tzu said that the highest state of man is to go with the flow, why should we go against it? Don't let the fear of change, the fear of our own life changing to Ruins, prevents us from renewing our love for life and for those around us.

The writers and directors are too eager for quick success and instant profit, which has caused us to see a selfish woman who is annoying. Watching her come and go willfully, she has no motive at all. Could she be the cold-blooded legend? ★★

I don’t understand this kind of feeling very well, and it’s not that the heroine is hypocritical. After all, she is a middle-class New York. Of course she must have spiritual pursuits if she is rich in material, but it is really difficult for someone like me who is very struggling to live to understand her. Strictly speaking, it’s not her problem, it’s not the movie’s problem, it should be my own problem (the original sin of poverty).

Eat Pray Love quotes

  • Liz Gilbert: Maybe my life hasn't been so chaotic. It's just the world that is and the only real trap is getting attached to any of it. Ruin is a gift. Ruin is the road to transformation.

  • Sofi: Maybe you're a woman in search of a word.
