"the time has come"

---charlie parker

we are post-beat poets, we are the generation of television,

we are the true discerners of drug addiction and profanity, we are

the afterthoughts of post-war experiments

National product

We are the spoiled adaptable and discriminated

last gang of over-thirties

We are the victims of the atomic bomb and the psychedelic

degenerates

We made marijuana a household word

Our parents' disapproval

We try to clarify everything that lies ahead of us.

We are post-beat poets,

inspired by tigers ,

gays

, wife-killers,

psychedelic water drinkers,

bookstore owners,

freedom fighters

, drug addicts,

priests, and jazz.

We tried to understand the West Coast according to the Word

Reading sacred Zen scriptures Drinking

on lonely beaches

and listening to music Staying awake on marijuana

deep in the lonely forest Slowly returning to the city lights where it always seemed to be in a good mood Some wives work hard and some take the hard things in their stride Some used to live on the road like Kerouac and now spend hours in front of the subway

Angry, reflecting on our once unfettered selves,

but we are all still writing our words their words the words of

all!

For ourselves and for all of

us We got drunk like Corso

and lovable elite never grew up

Never got more holy than you Ginsburg

We got ironic like Burroughs

The surreal time accompanies so fast Like so many stereoscopic ghosts

on starships We inject morphine and pay attention to what they pay attention to ghosts like Corso standing in front of the Chelsea hotel, in a little book as attentive as we are intoxicated and barefoot Sitting cross-legged and sitting on the mud we became the recorders of each other's lives Picking the way of life, stealing the moonlight We went to the temple to pay homage to the fat man and wrote haiku We never forgot our friends One of us accidentally disappeared into eternal destiny No more coming back in the fog Others keep silent, the music gets deeper year after year! We are post-beat poets more confident and proud of our immediate heritage We find lounging on the carpet beside colour TV sets Honey cats with cold eyes at night We, hippies, regardless of class Very primitive 20th century very Well-informed we all have our strengths and our intentions

Our personal styles

Our beliefs

change often and always the same

We all have our own good days

Our times are coming.

Howl quotes

  • [first lines]

Allen Ginsberg: "Howl" for Carl Salomon. I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix, angel-headed hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night...

[continues reading but unheard, credits roll]

  • Allen Ginsberg: There's no beat generation. It's just a bunch of guys trying to get published.
