In recent years, love sketches on the big screen are everywhere. This one is not particularly brilliant, but at least, it is less hypocritical and flawed, and more real and simple.
The first time I saw it was on the flight from Madrid to Dubai on August 30. I was so tired at the time that I fell asleep after watching it for less than 20 minutes. I woke up reluctantly because of my extremely uncomfortable legs in a small space. Looking at the inexplicable plot because of the disjointness, I thought this was the case. Another silly love story. The second time I saw it, it was already a month later, and I flew back to Madrid from Dubai. Although I was very lucky to get a ticket in the first row, I could rest my legs comfortably, but there was no trouble during the long journey. The latest movies offered by Emirates are the same ones from a month ago: "Kung Fu Dream," "Robin Hood," or "Prince of Persia," in English with Arabic subtitles. So I chose "Letter to Juliet" with bizarre Korean dubbing and Chinese subtitles.
Before this, I had never experienced the changing process of gradually becoming elated and tender at an altitude of 10,000 meters. This movie gave me a fresh first time, offsetting the irritability and helplessness of being tired but unable to catch sleep.
If anything, the hardware for this movie is mediocre. On the cast, it has no advantage or prominence in the lineup that Hollywood has used to get together with big names in recent years. Although the whole process was filmed in Verona, there have been many such scenes in recent years. But it just has a kind of power, and it has won the double harvest of box office and word of mouth.
"Romeo and Juliet" is an invisible thread in this film. I read Shakespeare's original work in the summer vacation of the sixth grade of elementary school, and now I have completely forgotten it. I just remember an excerpt from a high school textbook where Romeo said a narration under Juliet's window: "That is the East, and Juliet is the sun." This kind of love that is long-standing and separated by cultural differences, no matter in my opinion at that time or now, It's so unfamiliar that it's kind of funny. I can't identify with a man who hides under his lover's window and mutters like a madman, and I can't understand the kind of love that makes people willing to die, but I understand the reason for the existence of this work, and understand that Shakespeare is in Western literature. I know that even though a long time has passed and the times have changed a lot, the yearning and pursuit of romance is something that every couple in love has never given up.
This movie reminds me of a very thematic word called "advance with the times". In my opinion, that's why it worked. This is not a new word, nor is it a nascent creative idea, but it has another derivative called "spoof". The latter obviously carries a slightly pejorative connotation. In 1996 there was a movie called "Romeo and Juliet". Even the name hasn't changed, but I still think it's a completely twisted postmodern rendition. This is of course just a personal opinion, there must be people who will buy this kind of adaptation account, but I am definitely not one of them.
But "Letter to Juliet" is clearly a clever adaptation. It borrowed the soul of Shakespeare's famous works, and then subtly shifted its shape. It is more in line with the current people's concept of love and values. Although this is no longer an era of "life is precious and love is more expensive", the public has changed to other ways to pursue and guard the love they want. In other words, for Romeo and Juliet in the Middle Ages, the contradiction between the two families of Capulet and Montague was the biggest obstacle in love, and they could only use death to resolve it, but for modern people, love in love is the biggest obstacle. The obstacles may be more detailed and practical, and the solutions will naturally become diverse and simple. Many times, we can choose, but we just lack courage.
A sentence from the actor Charlie clearly reflects this change, he said, if I were Romeo, if I met true love, I would never mumble under her window, I would take her from there. Pull it down from the damn balcony, it's not over.
This is the difference between us now and Romeo and Juliet in the past. As the obstacles get smaller, our courage also gets weaker. What we need to face is not the trouble of dying together, we just sometimes get timid or even stop in front of obstacles such as maybe just a small balcony.
As Sophie said in her reply to Claire, in order to grasp true love, she eventually crossed the ocean, and Charlie did what he once said and pulled her lover off the balcony. They're not Romeo and Juliet in an age where everyone hesitates before obstacles, they're not love to die for love, they're not outright crazy, but they do what we all want and always miss .
Amanda Seyfried, I forgot which movie I saw her in for the first time. In short, it was definitely not the "Mamma Mia" that made her popular all over the world. Her appearance makes me feel very special, not a beauty at first glance, but if you look closely, you will feel very ethereal. I really like her and Egan's partner in this movie, not to mention how handsome and beautiful, but at least, there is a clear feeling of a couple and the sweetness of love.
This movie is really not that classic, but maybe at some point in ten years, I will suddenly think of it. Because although it is simple and peaceful, there must be a point that can fit our most real life. In today's Hollywood, when "Valentine's Day" leaves us confused, when "He doesn't like you that much" makes us depressed and sober, when "Fake Proposal" is still performing the old-fashioned way of happy friends In the mode, there is such a movie, it does not have the support of many big stars, and it is not just to amuse the audience, but it gives us a real inspiration. It made me believe that love doesn't just depend on one possibility, it doesn't just depend on fate. At least, we also have room to work on it.
This may be the message Juliet wants to send us. When they can still be trapped in a love that can't find a way out, when they can only use death to fight for love, it's just us who are separated by an ocean, what is the difficulty in wanting to love each other. Just start the steps and hold you firmly, this is the most worthwhile thing we can do for each other and for love.
