dialogue begins when Gopnik is overwhelmed by a series of misfortunes and turns to the rabbi
(the dialogue begins when Gopnik sees Rabbi then recounts his own series of misfortunes, omitted)
Rabbi: You know Lee Sussman?
Gopnik: Dr. Sussman? I guess I... yes
rabbi: did he tell you a story about pagan teeth?
Gopnik: No, um, what heretics?
Rabbi: Well, one day Lee was at work. You know, he was in charge of orthodontic surgery at Daxiong Hospital. At the time he was making plastic molds for a patient's orthodontic treatment. After the model was formed, Li was doing the inspection before making the appliance one day. He noticed a strange phenomenon. It seemed that there were letters carved on the inside of the patient's lower teeth. After being connected into a sentence, it meant: help me, save me. It was in the mouth (found) of a pagan who was called back under the guise of needing to be remeasured to make dental appliances. (Susherman asked the patient a series of questions, found that the patient was normal, and checked the teeth again, and found that the teeth were indeed engraved with those letters). Can Susherman eat? Susherman can't eat; is Susherman asleep? Sussman couldn't sleep. So Sussman researched other people's molds, whether pagans or Jews, (wanted to see) if there was any other information, but found nothing. He looked into his own mouth and there was nothing; he looked into his wife's mouth and there was nothing. Sussman was an educated man, perhaps not the greatest sage in the world, nor Martha's mentor, but he knew a thing or two about the Illuminati and the Miracles (Judaism). He understands that each Hebrew letter corresponds to a number, (converted) 8-4-5-4-4-7-3, seven numbers, maybe a phone number? He called and found nothing, so he went to the place where the phone was, which was a grocery store, and found nothing wrong. So Sussman went home, and he couldn't figure it out. He must find the answer, or he won't be able to fall asleep again. He went to see Guru Nahe (the rabbi) and he walked in and sat in the seat where you are sitting. (Susherman asks) "What does all this mean, Master? 'Save me?' Is this a signal from God?, What should I, Susherman, do to help this infidel? But what? Nothing on the teeth. Maybe I should help people to live more ethically? Is there an answer in the "Magic Law"? What about the "Lights"? Maybe, there is no problem at all? Tell me, Master, such a What does the signal mean?"
Gopnik: So? How did you tell him?
Rabbi: Sussman?
Gopnik: Yes
Rabbi: Does this have anything to do with (you)
Gopnik: Isn't that what you want to tell me?
Rabbi: Well, I told him, look, teeth, we don't understand; God's signal? Don't know; help others? Not a bad thing!
Gopnick: No, no, who did it? Was it for Sussman? Or to someone who finds it? Or, just... give, give...
Rabbi: We can't know
everything Gopnik: You don't seem to know anything, (then) why are you telling me this story?
Rabbi: First I have to tell you, I really shouldn't (speak) this
Gopnik: What happened to Susman?
Rabbi: What can there be? Nothing. He went about his business as usual, and for a while, he checked everyone's teeth, looking for new information, but never found it again. Soon he found that he stopped checking and his life was back to normal. These problems no longer bothered him, maybe like a toothache that Larry (referring to Gopnik) sometimes felt a pain for a while and then went away.
Gopnick: I don't want this to go away! I want an answer!
Rabbi: Of course, we all want answers, (but) God doesn't owe us answers, Larry. God doesn't owe us anything, we owe him.
Gopnick: If he doesn't give us answers, then why make us feel these questions?
Rabbi: (laughs) He didn't tell me why
Gopnik: (Silence for a while) What happened to the heretic later?
Rabbi: Heretic? Who cares?
Many times, many things, why do you need answers, even if you know the answer? Why did things develop to this point, and what is the effect of knowing it? The important thing is what state we should use to deal with everything that happens. We can't stop things from happening in many cases, but we can make our hearts stronger and stronger when we experience it. As at the end of the film, When a tornado comes, should we run or hide? Or should I ask why the tornadoes come suddenly?
