Grace kept saying, "What happened?"
Tommy kept saying, "you're my brother."
Finally sam said: "I killed him. I killed Joe Willis."
Maybe Sam was lucky, he at least tried to get back to his old life.
Maybe James (The Hurt Locker) was lucky to be back in a life where he could die every day, and for him it was alive and untroubled.
Maybe Sam is sad because he has gone where his soul can't come back;
maybe James is sad because he no longer loves his life as a human being.
He loves to defuse bombs.
