Critics say the film has an implicit left-wing communist leaning, and if so, it's the earliest proto-communism. Even so, the label feels nondescript. At its heart, Pasolini is just very simple, trying his best to restore a true portrait of Jesus that he thinks is the most faithful. He didn't want a script, he shot page by page according to the Gospels. The pictures were black and white, documentary-style, but poetic, powerful, and poetic and powerful.
