One director said that he showed violence in order to counter violence. Although I don't believe him, this statement is true. When violence is presented naked in front of you without packaging, how many people can understand the beauty from it. This is probably the talent of people with strange blood or special living environment. I thought most people would only be disgusted, or at most curious.
Why did Toth in the movie go the other way? It's easy to understand his curiosity when he recognized the old Nazi and his irritability after getting to know the old Nazi, but why did it turn out like that?
What the old Nazis did was show (describe) the existence of evil, without glorifying or making excuses. And the protagonist has nightmares and hallucinations all day after receiving these evils. It can be seen that he cannot face it calmly, which shows that he is completely a normal person.
What did he get from the old Nazis? Fear, means and lowering of the bottom line.
Thoth's first malice appeared on the night the old Nazi was at his family dinner. The old Nazi's nonsense made him feel sick, how could this be, why would he be able to do this. This made him dislike the old Nazis, and it also made him think that it was no exaggeration to deal with such people. He took the first step.
So there will be a second time, when the old Nazis deliberately made the consequences of the matter serious and took control of the relationship, so that Toth was completely terrified. This kind of threat to the destruction of the whole life is not something that a person of his age should bear. He has no strength to face it, so since he can't find what he wants in this drawer, and since there is another drawer, he can only went there to find it. As soon as the drawer was opened, the evil stool was real.
Afterwards, Todd's response to the threat has followed the line of evil and courage. Sometimes for a child to be good, it means a life change.
Answer the question at the beginning of the film, why people do what they do. It's just a matter of seeking security and an unconscious choice. Why is it so hard to understand? Different environments lead to different meanings of An and Li.
I love the subject matter of this film, as do the actors. But I think the director has not grasped a lot of things, and the inevitability of Todd's transformation has not been explained clearly. The whole process is a bit too natural and too "overbearing".
