In pre-war Germany, as always, the beautiful field scenery was like a forgotten village in the center of the world. Strict code of conduct, etiquette and reason are just another synonym for the suppression of human nature by ignorance and religion. The long shots that time almost stood still, the unsolved mysterious injury case for a long time, the lack of soundtrack except for the character performance scenes, the restraint and precise emotion and aura of the actors, all make Michael Haneke's story about "a German child's life". Story”’s black-and-white film exudes a calm heaviness that makes one want to escape but can’t stop. The power of freedom and rebelliousness in the human body is suppressed by sanctimonious ruthlessness, and it can only seek a more hidden, more ruthless way to escape.
