like winter outside the window

The new year has just started, and there is a snow.
From the window, the weather was gloomy, and only some black tile roofs and snow could be seen, like black and white films. And it is a silent film, the world is very quiet, it seems that the new year is still a little rusty.
In such afternoons and evenings, unless there is a very numb or tenacious nerve, it is possible to work or write.
A vulnerable person like me, in this atmosphere, can't do anything but watch CDs.
Poured a glass of Jacob's Creek, Shiraz, elegant tannins, balanced, weak structure, not complex, like every day.
The film is called "The Visitor", and after a few glances, I know that I have chosen the right film, suitable for the snow outside, winter, silence, and the beginning of the calendar.
Some people will find the film boring, but I think it's just right. It is said that in foreign countries, the ticket price for this film in the cinema is more expensive, because it is classified as a film, not a movie. It is also said that film is an art film, a niche; movie refers to a mass film. There are also people who translate film into movies and movies into movies.
The professor who taught the same course for 20 years, Walter (played by Richard Jenkins, who is really good), basically doesn't talk much in the movie. The son's mother didn't speak much either. The black woman didn't speak much either. This is a basically silent film. The most common words are spoken. You're back. How about the meeting today. I'm leaving. OK. I am sorry. goodbye. Good night.
The most talked about in the movie is the African drum. Three beat drums, not classical, very free. The people in the movie are not very free, but the drums are very free.
Hearing that drum sound reminds me of Africa. Think of heavy rain and rainbows. Think of animals and wind.
When Walter was learning the piano, he taught his old lady, who kept instructing him, saying that the hands should be bent like a tunnel so that the train could pass. If I were a screenwriter, I would ask the old lady to say a few more words, for example, learn the piano, use your brain to think and so on. Because, by contrast, when Walter was learning African drums, Terreke said, when you play drums, you don't need a brain.
A man may be free when he does not use his mind.
Walter, who had never laughed much, laughed when he was playing drums among a group of black people. I believe the audience smiles when they see him laughing.
But when he laughs, I want to cry.
When Walter and Tyreke's mother parted at the airport, they were both restrained and expressionless. But I know it's hard for them because it's hard for me to watch.
They won't see each other again. However, that only one hug, I believe, can warm them in the days to come.

The Visitor quotes

  • Zainab: Why did you invite him?

Tarek Khalil: We're staying in his apartment. What could I do?

Zainab: And I'll be stuck with him while you play your drum.

Tarek Khalil: You know you're very sexy when you're mad at me.

    [leans in to kiss her]

Prof. Walter Vale: [interrupts] Hello! If you don't mind, I think I will come.

    Tarek Khalil: Cool.

Prof. Walter Vale: Let me get my coat.

    [Zainab frustrates]

  • Prof. Walter Vale: I've been teaching the same course for 20 years, and it doesn't mean anything to me. None of it does. I pretend. I pretend that I'm busy, that I'm working, that I'm writing. I'm not doing anything.
