four seasons of life

I don't know when I started to like watching Kim Ki-duk's movies. I am obsessed with all the weird emotions in it, and I am obsessed with the Zen meaning conveyed in silent words. Through these films, we feel the director's incisive display of human nature and his mockery of various social phenomena. Among his many works, only this "Spring Comes to Winter Comes to Another Spring" presents us a picture of the four seasons of life with a sympathetic vision under the general pattern. Only when it is so peaceful, it is unusually full and has a long aftertaste.

Spring, enlightenment.

With the slow opening of the two doors, it can be seen that the mountains are surrounded by mountains, and in the middle of the huge lake, there is a temple floating quietly on the water. It is like drifting grass, as if it will sway along the water waves at any time, but it seems to be deeply rooted, as if it was pulled by a force in the dark. Then we saw two monks in the temple, one old and one young. One seems to have seen everything, the other is a chaotic ignorant child. Every one of us went through this stage to some extent as a child. Curious and fearless about everything around you. Even the serpent, which symbolizes danger, is free to play in the eyes of the newborn calf.

However, we will eventually learn to fear and learn to understand life. Just as the little monk happily puts shackles on fish, frogs and snakes, just for fun, ignoring the consequences of doing so. The old monk saw everything and said nothing. It was only later that the little monk was put on the same shackles. Let the little monk realize what is called "do not do to others what you do not want to do to yourself". When the young child dragged the heavy shackles to redeem his sins one by one, he finally understood the fear of life. So, facing the rotting body of the snake, he burst into tears.

Summer, wake up.

Farewell to childhood, we go to lush youth. The little monk also grew into a handsome young man with strong blood. Nature, in its own way, awakened the lust in him. Everything grows, it is nature. No matter what his status was, he couldn't resist the girl's bowed smile. The latent instinct in her body finally burst out after several rounds of exploration with her. Two men and women who are in their youth, do not know how to control their desires and act recklessly. The lust raging like a flood completely overwhelmed the little monk. At this time, his heart should be infinitely agitated, the more he has, the more he wants to get. After the old monk finally sent the girl away, the young monk who couldn't hold back also secretly left. Being young is a double-edged sword. Sometimes it means passion, and it is also difficult to resist the temptation of passion.

Autumn, introspect.

In the blink of an eye for decades, the frost leaves are gradually dyed. The old monk still lives as usual, raising a white cat, and his life is as light as water. Inadvertently caught a glimpse of the news about the man in the newspaper, killed his wife, and was on the run. So, like the old monk, we waited for his appearance. Then he saw his helpless figure again. The man at this time was very down and out, and there was a suffocating aura between his eyebrows. He had just returned from the mundane world, and he was extremely angry. There are too many unsatisfactory things in life these years, and what you like, others may also like. He was defeated in such a contest and went to extremes.

All this is not as simple as hurting animals when he was a child, and he bears the shackles for himself that cannot be lifted. So even if I return to the temple, it is difficult for my heart to return to its original peace. "I feel very painful," he said. The old monk asked him, didn't you know in advance what the world was like? Even so, people can't help but immerse themselves in it. He came back with all kinds of unsatisfied desires, and his heart was filled with the anger of being betrayed and the guilt of killing his wife. When he found out that he had attempted suicide, the old monk finally punished him severely with a stick. Using death to escape is not necessarily a wise choice. So, he used the knife as the murder weapon to shave himself, and his eyes finally became clearer.

When receiving the police who came after him, the old monk remained calm. Just a whisper, please let him finish engraving the Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra, so as to dispel the anger in his heart and restore peace. At this time, the knife became a tool for the little monk to write letters, which is really meaningful. During the night of lettering, the little monk gradually eliminated his hostility, and his relationship with the police also eased. The old monk at this time was like the ship that had already passed the passengers. Having completed his mission, he finally closed the seven orifices and sank into the lake together with the boat.

Winter, another spring. reincarnation.

When the two doors were pushed open again, the snow was white. The little monk has become a middle-aged man with smooth eyes. He inherited the old monk's mantle and guarded the temple. Practise earnestly to strengthen your body and mind. The past experiences have become part of his life, so he carried these on his back and sent the Buddha statue to the top of the mountain. The lens took a long time to record its process. The viewer's memory turns back to spring without knowing it, how similar the situation is. The little monk went around in circles and returned to the original starting point.

And the abandoned baby came to the temple with a cry. To our surprise, life turns around. Young monks will eventually become old monks, and babies will grow into young monks. At the end of the film, we look at the little monk who has grown up, making the same mistakes as in "Chun". Can not help but sigh, everything is the same. Everyone's life is probably not fundamentally different. Just like the tongue twister of "the old monk tells a story to the young monk", it goes on and on from generation to generation.

The concept-first movie is the best. This is a great example of how the artist decides the style of the film. I still like the "Xia" section. As for the "Winter" section, Kim Kidd is indeed crazy...

Everything has not changed, but the heart has changed; the eyes, nose, mouth and ears are closed, but the heart is not closed. Where do you put your Buddha? Is it on the desk at your fingertips, on the distant mountains out of reach, or in your heart?

  • Old Monk: Lust awakens the desire to possess. And that awakens the intent to murder.

  • Old Monk: Didn't you know beforehand how the world of men is? Sometimes we have to let go of the things we like. What you like, others will also like."
