It is difficult to give a "standard" screen image for a person like Ian. Just like Kurt, who is regarded as a god by the Chinese, it is difficult for you to find a balance between the objective reality and the subjective psychology of the audience. The deceased is long gone. Since the answer cannot be obtained from Ian's own mouth, the speculations of the outside world and the narratives of some so-called people around him have become the most authoritative statement, but this does not match the Ian in the hearts of some loyal fans. Just as Hu Shi said, "History is a little girl who can be dressed up by others." Ian's spirit in heaven could only sigh when he saw this situation.
So I think that the director should have a basic position for the shaping of this kind of character image. The director of this film is trying to find a balance point, hoping to shoot a true and objective Ian full of JD temperament. But this is just a movie, not a documentary, it's hard to be completely objective, not even a documentary. In this case, the "disconnection" of the characters before and after the whole film is not difficult to understand. The somewhat cynical Ian in front of him ended up being an infatuated man who was so entangled in love that he committed suicide. You can't say that Ian's death had nothing to do with love, but to say that Ian's death was entirely because of women, I would raise my hands against it. Anyone who has listened carefully to Joy Division can feel the struggle and darkness, just like the famous saying about JD that someone said: "As long as you are alive, this kind of music will never belong to you. "I can't accept that Ian died because of a few women. Although there are many episodes of epileptic seizures in the film, in the handling of Ian's death at the end, it gives the feeling that it is because of a woman. Is this still called objective? Or a myth? neither. A movie is an artistic creation. If it is a complete and meticulous restoration, it is not called a movie. Moreover, as I mentioned in the previous paragraph, it is difficult for you to say how objective this movie is.
In my opinion, instead of getting entangled in the so-called objective reality, it is better to let go and shoot the Ian in the heart of a fan, even if that Ian may not be so objective, but for the fans of Joy division, it is really A great relief. Thanks to the lovely science and technology for leaving us those images of him, the man who speaks spasmly and dances a robot dance is unforgettable; but this movie, which appeared nearly 30 years after his death, only made I just complained, and although the black and white images are sensually satisfying, I don't believe that Ian is a petty bourgeois young man who sacrificed his love for love.
