The plot No. 9 is old-fashioned, and it can only stimulate people's nerves by crackling fights, so that they won't fall asleep while watching the movie. The reason why No. 9 is determined to defeat the monster, in my opinion, is entirely because he owes his hand to activate the monster in the first place. No. 2 had already told him that this was a very important thing, and he put it on the monster without thinking about it - why is it so much trouble?
As for the 9's lack of hands, it may be explained by its ignorance/children's curiosity/inexperienced/everyone makes mistakes/even Gestalt psychology. Couldn't he be careful in such an environment?
If it is new, then maybe only the character modeling. Sack robot, messy stitches, screw cap eyes, tapered legs... I always think of the little clay figurines sold in supermarkets with grass growing on their heads, there is not much difference, neither cute nor not beautiful. Maybe I shouldn't judge people by their appearance, but, they are also robots and the end of the world, how can Valli and Eva be so cute?
Well, the last point, the theme, or the spirit of the movie, can be summed up in one sentence, that is: the sack movie robot version of Lord of the Rings.
