It's a gimmick to me

The first movie I watched back in Paris was 9. There are more disappointments than surprises, but compared to the "Ugly Truth" I watched later, it is worth the ticket price.
The background of the film is the war, the war between humans, the war between humans and machines, and the war between the mainline "digital humans" and giant machine monsters. The word "war" alone has made this cartoon rise to the height of "adult", not to mention the corpse at the beginning, which runs through the despair and pessimism of the doomsday complex of the whole film. Of course, I have to mention the suspense revealed in the last part of the movie, the true identities of the "digital people" and the way to fight against the giant robot monsters, which add a layer of human metaphor to the movie. But that's all.
In fact, the movie has great creativity and imagination, that is, the character settings in the film, whether it is the protagonist or the villain, can make people's eyes shine. The figures with different shapes and personalities and those strange machine monsters can be said to be the biggest highlight of this film. The "war between humans and machines" repeatedly mentioned in the film is already commonplace for audiences. In addition to creativity, it is technology. A large number of action scenes in the film are dazzling and dazzling, and sometimes even admire the beauty of the pictures. It is the advanced technology that easily allows the audience to enter the apocalypse belonging to digital people.
And these have nothing to do with the plot.
During the viewing of the film, I wondered many times whether the plot was serving technology. There are only 4 important locations mentioned in the film, the birthplace of 9 - the hiding place of 1 - the factory - the library of the twins. The story has been twisting and detouring in these four locations, and the thrilling action scenes that keep appearing can't help but give people a feeling of "deliberately created". With such a grand story background, surprising originality and unlimited imagination, I believe that if we can really "create", there may be an animated version of "The Lord of the Rings".
It's a pity that the movie finally stops at the viewing level. It is exaggerated to say that "adult animation" is actually a cliché Hollywood blockbuster. The whole story follows the standard steps, and even the anti-climax of the "resurrection" of the robot monster at the end is so Hollywood, so I finally saw the dead digital people "return to the soul" and then "go to heaven". It also feels normal. As for the "metaphor of human nature" mentioned above, it is only superficial in the end, because the limitations of the plot cannot be extended, and under the appearance of "adult", it seems a little superficial and immature.
That's why I'm disappointed. The film has technology, imagination, war background, and metaphors of human nature, but it seems that all of them have become gimmicks. What cannot be ignored is the weakness of the plot. Maybe it's because "9" was originally just a short film, and it was extended and expanded because it was favored by the Oscars. I haven't seen the short film, I'm sure it will be better.

I ended up giving it four stars. Because as an entertainment film, the rhythm of the film from start to finish is considered passable, and the dazzling imagination and technology greatly improve the viewing experience. Overall it's still worth seeing, but it's best not to expect more.

  • 1: I know enough to leave their ancient evils to molder. Look what they've left us with. Leave it be, I say! But YOU! Always asking questions. So many pointless questions. Probing. PUSHING. Like 2! He always had to know too much!

9: I was right; you DID send him out to die!

1: He was old! He was WEAK!

  • 1: When we awoke in this world, it was chaos. Man and machine attacked each other with fire and metal. I lead us here to sanctuary and here we waited for the war to end. Slowly, the world became silent. The only thing that remains now is The Beast. So we stay hidden, and we wait for it too, to sleep.

9: But where did it come from? Why is it hunting us?

1: Questions like that are pointless. We need to protect ourselves; keep ourselves out of danger.
