When I find that I can't calm down, I always pull out a BBC mini-series "South and North" that I have treasured for a long time. Looking at the soft picture, I play a soothing and slightly sad piano music in my ears, as if I will also be in that elegant and warm world, where girls have long skirts and gentlemen are polite. There, the feelings are always subtle and subtle, and a look, a look back, a smile, and even a back will be transformed into a beautiful picture, a romantic poem, and an intoxicating melody.

Based on Mrs Gaskell's novel of the same name, "South and North" tells a story very similar to "Pride and Prejudice." The heroine Margaret is noble and elegant, good at thinking and assertive, and young and cowardly in the face of love. The male protagonist John is indifferent and even a bit mean, but he is upright and sensitive. Their acquaintance was not pleasant. Amidst the cotton wool in the textile factory, Margaret raised her head and saw the handsome prince aloft, with a serious and indifferent expression. The next second, the prince turned into a thug, chasing after the workers who were smoking in the factory and started running, his fists mercilessly smashed on the poor workers.

There are too many differences between him and her, too many conflicts.

Margaret came from Houston, a sunny southern country with fresh air, yellow roses in bloom, meadows and farms, the sound of birds, the warm warmth of the air, and the indolence of people's lives. , there is her paradise. She hoped that her wedding would be a way of ditching all the clutter and festivities and just walking through a corridor of bushes and flowers, holding her lover's arm on a sunny afternoon. She didn't get such a wedding, and though she had the chance, she moved her family to the industrial city of Milton, which she called hell, for her father's faith.

John is from the north where the manufacturing industry is developed. He has a strong mother. He has a set of principles of his own, and he insists on it stubbornly. His life is full of the rumbling noise of machines. Even his house is deliberately chosen near the factory. His mother said it represented his achievement and status. He builds his kingdom in Milton, where the air is dirty and the streets are dirty. He is a master who defends his own interests strongly, expressing himself with indifference and stubbornness, until a ray of sunshine carries the scent of roses Through the flying cotton wool into the heart.

They conflicted but attracted to each other because of geographical differences. He began to appreciate her kindness and serenity, and she gradually understood the reasons for his indifference and stubbornness. They were changed by each other unknowingly. After returning to Houston, Margaret could not agree with the unprincipled obedience of the South, and she told her aunt in London that the happy days of ease and laziness would never be returned. John avoided everyone after his own factory went bankrupt and went to Houston alone to pick a bunch of yellow roses.

Love is pure in stories like this. It is like a slow and comfortable lullaby. I don't feel anything when I listen to it, but I toss and turn and can't sleep without it.
Such love stories are romantic and stereotypical: encounter, conflict, misunderstanding, understanding, reunion. But it doesn't matter if it's not an old-fashioned story, as long as it touches the heartstrings, it doesn't matter. I don't think I'm a sensitive person, and I won't hurt spring and autumn, but most women are no match for one feeling - happiness.

As the train gallops, Margaret quietly watches the passing scenery. This is the beginning and last shot of the film. A person's life is like riding a train, most of the scenery is passing by in a hurry, only the people who sit next to them and watch the scenery together are the most important.

North & South quotes

  • Hannah Thornton: A mother's love holds fast and forever. A girl's love is like a puff of smoke - it changes with every wind.

  • Margaret Hale: I wish I could tell you how lonely I am. How cold and harsh it is here. Everywhere there is conflict and unkindness. I think God has forsaken this place. I believe I have seen hell and it's white, it's snow-white.
