A civet cat and man's war

Yesterday I watched a cartoon "Variety Tanuki", also known as "Heisei Tanuki". Humans invaded the home of the civet cats, and the civet cats decided to take revenge on the human beings and snatch back the forest by using their innate transformation skills.

This is a cartoon without a protagonist, without a big hero, and the battle scenes are full of ease. The civet cats were happily fighting, as if it was just a game. They rejoice easily, and a little victory gives them enough reason to celebrate, party, sing, dance. They are easy-going and cheerful, and even when debating whether to kill all the humans, they drool over hamburgers, tempura, and decide to keep some of the humans. As Elder Jinshe said, a civet cat without a spirit of entertainment is not a civet cat.

But in the blink of an eye, human beings easily shattered their fragile dreams. Their desperate efforts are so meager in the eyes of human beings that they cannot hinder the process of residential development. Large areas of their homes have been lost, and they have fallen into depression and loss again, and even have of people advertised with the spectacle they created! The civet cats are angry, someone has stolen their honor, but they also do not accept the fox's condition - to work for humans. The gonta who advocated killing all human beings (doesn't know if the spelling is wrong?) finally ended his wish in a kamikaze-style way, sad! The 999-year-old elder, who was passively escaping, led the civet cat to escape, but the result was still death. Although they have mastered ancient illusions, and although countless warriors have sacrificed, in the end, they cannot save their homes. The civet cat that can transform becomes a human and lives the life of a clerk, while the one who cannot transform lives on the roadside and in the park, eating the garbage on the roadside. Living in the sewers, the civet cat crossing the road was hit and killed, and although signs were erected, it seemed too late.

Speaking of which, maybe it's just the typical ending of Hayao Miyazaki's animation. The animals are sad and reluctantly withdrew after paying a painful price. The endings of "Princess Mononoke" and "Nausicaa" are sour and tragic. They can never defeat humans, and ancient magic and cold weapons can never fight modern excavators and pistols. In the end, it's just the sacrifice of the large-scale, and the helpless departure.

But this cartoon is different. The overall style is relaxed. The battle of the civet cats is sometimes like a children's prank, full of knowing little joys everywhere. Will be happy for the four little civet cats, laugh at the elders' hip-hop pretending, laugh at the act of intimidating the human police, and admire the parade of the civet cats. The overall feeling of the picture is green, and the civet cat is always in a state of transformation and semi-transformation, which is very naive. At the end, the tanukis meet in the park's open space, and the tanukis who turned into humans also take off their clothes and turn back into tanukis to participate. They still sing and dance, and the past doesn't seem to have left any shadows. When they can't change, they adapt to this society, maybe this is the best ending for them. The easy-going and kind-hearted civet cats, may you continue to rejoice in this "forest" of reinforced concrete, don't lose your nature!

They say "as cunning as a civet cat", but how can a civet cat be more cunning than a human?

There are plots, details, laughter and tears, and the ending is very helpless but also very loving! "As the TV Center said, both foxes and tanukis will gradually disappear as development progresses. Can't this be stopped? If both foxes and tanukis disappear, what will happen to rabbits and ferrets? Will it gradually disappear?" "It wouldn't be a civet cat without a playful spirit!"

★★★★☆ I was very moved to see the part where I turned into a forest at the end. How stupid are human beings to make their homeland into this ghostly appearance step by step? In fact, this ending is much better than "Avatar"...

Pom Poko quotes

  • Ponkichi: If we get rid of all the humans, that means... we'll never eat tempura again! Or beef jerky! Or popcorn.

Tanuki: Hamburgers! Donuts! Potato chips! Pepperoni pizza! Chicken wings!

[Gonta is moved by this. His eyes tear and his mouth waters]

    Gonta: I can taste it!

Seizaemon: So, then, do you think it would be alright if we kept a few humans around, Gonta?

Gonta: [wiping the saliva from his mouth] We have no choice.

  • Shokichi: Master, would you re-enact the tale of the young samurai who shot the fan?

Hage: Ah. I'll need some help.

[He transforms into Nasu no Yoichi. He flies towards the crowd. Gonta's eyes bulge as he realizes that Master Hage is homing in on him. The crowd of tanuki scramble. Master Hage lands on Gonta and clings to his back. The Taka tanuki struggles, then hops around on all fours and turns into a horse. Hage rides around the clearing. Water seems to flood into the clearing, and Master Hage rides Gonta into it. Before them is an image of the sea, and three boats. One of the boats has the image of a woman standing on the bow of the boat and a fan on the top of the mast. Hage draws a bow and shoots the fan, sending it flying into the air]
