Wikipedia says
"Along with The Long Absence, Viridiana was the winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival, but it was banned in Spain for sixteen years, due to the condemnation (as "blasphemous") issued by the Vatican."
and gives one evidence that
"the beggars resemble Da Vinci's Last Supper. This scene, in particular, earned the film the Vatican's opprobrium."
However, in my opinion, the movie was banned by Vatican not only blasphemous, it tells a story about the process how a pure nun became non-vatican woman because of doubting her deeply trusted belief.
Well, a funny ending shall be highlighted here, as usually be implying a ménage à trois, says in wiki. But to me, this is more an artish-like-movie ending than implying ménage à trois. Using a very widely used Chinese phrase , it is just "Play B(Play B. lol)".
Any way, I highly recommend to those who have been interested in religion movies to watch it. I would like to give it a 5-star.
