Realistic, brutal mountaineering

Based on real historical events, this film tells the story of the failure of the capital to challenge the north wall of Eiger in 1936. The film not only compares climbers' windy meals and rough sleeping with the media's splendid food, but also shows the competition among climbers. Cruelly, this competition turned out to be the direct cause of the eventual tragedy. At the end of the film, when Tony died in front of the rescuer and his beloved woman, this cruelty was shown to the extreme. In addition, the film is also quite realistic in terms of details, such as the famous "Hinterstoisser Traverse", which I believe will make climbing enthusiasts feel the same. This year's German Film Critics Association also awarded the film the Best Screenplay Award.

What is the significance of recreating such a tragic piece of history? Is it just to honor the pioneers?

North Face quotes

  • [first lines]

    [in German, quoting English subtitles]

Luise Fellner: [voiceover] When you're at the bottom - Toni once told me - at the foot of the wall, and you look up, you ask yourself: How can anyone climb that? Why would anyone even want to? But hours later when you're at the top looking down, you've forgotten everything. Except the one person you promised you would come back to.

  • [last lines]

    [in German, quoting English subtitles]

Luise Fellner: [voiceover] All I know is that death spared me, and that Toni went away forever that day. One has lived if one has loved. There are times when I find this infinitely hard to believe. Most days I feel that I am alive. And that love is the reason for that.
