Religious content is too deep, overall not bad movie

At first I thought it was just an ordinary suspense film about suspenseful murders, but after seeing it, I found out that the film also hides a deep religious background. It is a pity that this background is too deep for me, an ordinary Chinese audience, and I know almost nothing about the religious history of Europe. In the process of watching the movie, I could only vaguely feel that the director was alluding to something, but I could not fully understand it.
The plot of the whole movie is quite smooth, and some plots are a bit problematic at first, but it is reasonable to push carefully. However, I personally feel that the beginning is too slow, there are too many clues, and with the looming religious background, I can't understand it until the second half.
In the end, anyway, for the charm of Johnny Depp, this movie is worth watching.

Polly Nichols: The bobbies are trackin' us!

Polly's John: Gotta get the old man hard first.

Polly Nichols: Give it here. I'll put it in meself!

    [she grabs his genitals]

    Polly's John: Is that in?

Polly Nichols: Of course it is. Come on!

Polly's John: No, it's not. Ya got it stuck between yer bleedin' legs!

Polly Nichols: [frustratingly] No, I haven't! Come on!

Polly's John: I knows it when I feels it!
