In love, does the soul rule the body, or does the body rule the soul?

The voice you hear is not my speaking voice... But my mind voice.

I have not spoken since I was six years old. No one knows why. Not even me.

My father says, it is a dark talent. And the day I take it into my head to stop breathing will be my last.

The stranger thing is I don't think myself silent. That is because of my piano.

A mute woman, a piano, fingers flying between black and white keys The skillful jumping and music fully interpret the feelings of this weak woman.

This is the story of a woman named Ada. Her black pupils always showed a cold light, her cheeks were thin and smooth, and her skin was as white as an angel's. She has always been silent, silently living in her own world, her language, her love, her loneliness, her agility. The piano has become the only outlet for her soul, and her fingers are her wings. What was presented to outsiders was only her body. Including her husband, a rich and rational man who compared himself to a god who accepted her silence, did not understand this woman. They even thought that she was a little weird, with indifferent eyes, lazy limbs, no interest in anything, only the piano.

For her piano, she would rather have a deal, a deal of flesh, with a vulgar man with a tattoo on his face, who is not even comparable to her husband in every way. Ten keys at a time. But she didn't know that it was such a somewhat wild man who fell in love with her deeply after hearing her tunes and seeing her focused expression. Even at the same time, I fell in love with that piano, that huge, cold and lonely piano. He stroked each key gently, with his rough hands, his clumsy fingers trembling slightly. It was him who understood her soul, the one that was released from the sound of the piano.

So he lured her into sin. He possessed her, greedily enjoying her flesh. He used all his enthusiasm to please her, but she was still cold, with no expression on her face and silent lips. So he was dismayed. He changed his mind, he returned the piano to her, he told her he didn't want to be like a whore, he opened the door to let her go.

However, she turned back over and over again, steadfast, courageous and without hesitation. Even when her husband grabbed her body, she clung to the tree by the road; she was locked up; even on the eve of her husband raising an axe to chop off her fingers, she did not waver. Yes, it is love. Because of love, she is not afraid, her eyes are firm, frank and eager. So, her husband cut off her wings, and the selfish and furious man tried to stop his wife's betrayal with brutal injuries. It's a pity that he doesn't know much about women, especially a woman who is chasing love. She didn't cry, there was not even a trace of pain on her face, the corners of her mouth moved, and I seemed to see a smile, a relieved smile. Does it hurt? The pain of the body has long been overwhelmed by the abundance of true love in the heart.

It was a very successful movie, The Piano. Watanabe once commented: This is a classic work that reflects the awakening of female sexual consciousness.

Is it sex, is it just sexual awareness? Could it be that it was only physical pleasure that made her look back? That man developed her body with more sexual skills than her husband? The bodily pleasure brought by a sex act bewitched the soul, making her betray her husband so easily? Obviously, the woman later fell in love with the man who once possessed her body. However, what made her surrender her long-hidden soul to love without hesitation?

The director's choice of a dumb girl as the heroine of the story is very representative. Women are naturally sensitive animals and like to rely on intuition, especially a disabled woman who lives vividly in a world that the outside world cannot touch. Thus, her heart, her senses, and her intuition are sharper, more ethereal, and purer than ordinary women. Such a closed woman was aroused by a sexual encounter with true love. What she is obsessed with is not sex itself, but the man's love beyond pure sexual desire that she feels through sex and physical intercourse. His intense love for her penetrated into every inch of her skin through the flesh, pierced her nerves, and finally took root in the depths of her soul.

These are women, the sober bunch who don't get lost in mere sensuality, even in the midst of crazy sex. This is also determined by the physical characteristics of women. Women's sexual desires come slowly and lingeringly. In each process of sex, they can experience different sexual pleasures. The degree of sexual pleasure depends on the degree of combination of sex and love. Men are different. Men's sexual desires come quickly and violently. They do not need the so-called prelude, and the sexual pleasure they experience is only the most violent at the moment of ejaculation, and other processes can even be ignored relative to the end. So, for a man, the pleasure of a hand and a woman's body is no different. Therefore, looking at the real society, women are mostly cheating for love, and men are mostly cheating for excitement and novelty. These are nature.

Coming back to the film again, the dumb girl's body felt loved, and so did her heart. So she responded with her whole body and mind. If you see through my soul, why not give up my life? Dumb women are brave. Her persistent pursuit of love eventually made her husband let them go. Since then, in another small town, the dumb girl began to try to learn the language, and they started another peaceful life. And that piano lay quietly in a corner of the deep sea.

There are many people who feel that the ending of the story is not perfect. They believe that dumb women should sacrifice for art, sink to the bottom of the sea with that piano, and be silent forever in a silent world. In that way, it can be considered to echo the beginning of the movie, and a more shocking artistic effect can be achieved. I don't think so. This arrangement has divided the role of the mute girl into two parts. The piano, as a part of the mute girl's soul, represents her return to the original silent world together with her most intense, sincere and tragic betrayal of love. The dumb girl herself spoke up, and she returned to real life as an ordinary woman, representing thousands of women in the world who are chasing true love.

Therefore, in love, whether the soul dominates the body or the body dominates the soul is not so important. If you see through my soul, why not even tell me to give up my life?

The Piano quotes

  • Ada: I have told you the story of your father many many times.

Flora: Oh, tell me again! Was he a teacher?

    Ada: Yes.

Flora: How did you speak to him?

Ada: I didn't need to speak. I could lay thoughts out in his mind like they were a sheet.

Flora: Why didn't you get married?

Ada: He became frightened and stopped listening.

  • [first lines]

Ada: The voice you hear is not my speaking voice - -but my mind's voice. I have not spoken since I was six years old. No one knows why - -not even me. My father says it is a dark talent, and the day I take it into my head to stop breathing will be my last. Today he married me to a man I have not yet met. Soon my daughter and I shall join him in his own country. My husband writes that my muteness does not bother him - and hark this! He says, "God loves dumb creatures, so why not I?" 'Twere good he had God's patience, for silence affects everyone in the end. The strange thing is, I don't think myself silent. That is because of my piano. I shall miss it on the journey.
