Kothbiro

Africa has always had many labels, desolation, poverty, AIDS, barbarism...
This is the first film I've seen that confronts its wounds. Under the impact of modern civilization, human nature exposes its weaknesses.
I like the blue eyes of Ralph Finnes, and suddenly the feelings of "The English Patient" surged up again; Rachel Weisz lost her simplicity, beautiful and strong.
Fernando Meirelles well integrates the desolate atmosphere of Africa into the film, sunsets, lakes, birds, sparse trees, the eyes of African children.
I especially like Fernando Meirelles's use of frightening waterfowl instead of gunshots. The best description of cruelty is a silent indictment.
The ending song Kothbiro is heartbroken, but can't seem to escape: This is Africa.

I have always wanted to say: There are too few movies about Africa in China, and we know very little about Africa! Only when I have been to Africa will I find that the civilized world seems to really treat this place as a garbage pool. Suffering thousands of miles away won't hurt you, but suffering is still suffering. The whole of Africa is our sin.

Social issues, but there are some routines in the shooting

The Constant Gardener quotes

  • Justin Quayle: Your life is your own. That was always our agreement.

Tessa Quayle: No, no, no. The agreement was, that my *work* was going to be my own. That's what makes me who I am.

  • Sir Kenneth "Kenny" Curtiss: You're what passes for James Bond around here. Get Her Majesty's Secret Service to pull a few things. It's what you spies do, isn't it?

Tim Donohue: Is it? Never really sure what it is we do.

    [putts golf ball towards hole]

Sir Kenneth "Kenny" Curtiss: [Angrily kicks Tim's ball aside] Don't even think about bullying me, old man. I'm not a member of your gentleman's club. I don't have to play by the rules.

Tim Donohue: So it would seem.

    [looks at ball]

Tim Donohue: Let's call that one "in". shall we?
