not the best is better than the best

I just finished watching it, and I am hesitating between giving 4 stars or 5 stars. In terms of cast, shooting techniques, and narrative process, this film may not be the best, but it is very worth watching and worth recommending!

I guess that this should be a film adapted from a novel, because there is so much to describe in the film that it is impossible to explain it all in one film. Moreover, it is more difficult for us who are not familiar with Western beliefs, history and humanities to fully understand it.

In a nutshell, this is a film that describes human nature. In the context of a small Italian city during World War II, it takes the racial discrimination within the U.S. military as its tragic starting point, takes Christianity as its conception, and mixes English, German, and Italian languages. The incidents of people from three countries, the Italian guerrillas, and the Italian people are interspersed. The contempt and distrust of the American whites for the blacks are contrasted with the Christian confession of the guerrillas and the unblemished conscience of the German officers. .

Every step in the development of the plot has no rules to follow. Only by watching it patiently can you know the cause and effect. Therefore, this is more like a novel with a grand narrative. It uses the narrative to attract you, move you, and infect you.
