human story

A political film without a preset position, it tells about the various struggles between fascist forces and resistance movement in France during World War II, and within the resistance movement. The success of the heroes praised by the victorious side of the revolution is of course because they adhered to the correct position, followed the bright beliefs, and conformed to the trend of history, but the film did not blindly beautify this just organization. And deliberately highlighted the various weaknesses of their internal members' characters, especially the middle-aged leader Philip, Jebier, his various actions are already a manifestation of dictatorship under the cloak of justice. The angle of the film is a bit extreme. It is probably the director's personal intention to write such a story on purpose, but it also allows the audience to view the war objectively. Many dark sides of human nature are exposed in the face of political struggle, whether it is the enemy or our side. A mistake, but the nature of the mistake is different. Although our internal mistakes seem to be irrelevant to the overall war, it still makes people sigh and sigh for the director to describe it like this. In the two scenes of killing the traitor, you can feel the director's inner struggle and fluctuations. It is impossible for such an emotional shot not to incite the audience. It is very rare for a very human story to stick to this angle.

It makes me sad. Is war really as the video says, exposing the most noble and ugliest side of human nature?

I'll never die, deep, depressing and ordinary, Melville's best movie, the part where the Germans are shooting the machine gun seems to really want to kill him, the opening scene where the Germans lined up on the Arc de Triomphe is so fierce

Army of Shadows quotes

  • Philippe Gerbier: See you later, Comrade.

    Legrain: ...You're a communist?

Philippe Gerbier: No. But I can still have comrades.

  • Claude Ullmann dit 'Le Masque': Still thinking about the others?

[referring to the resistance fighters, who, like him, were targets in the German shooting gallery]

Philippe Gerbier: No, I was thinking of the officer who was sure I'd run too. Like a scared rabbit...
