When I heard my uncle's murder proposal with my brother in the rain before, there was no big difference compared to my brother Ivan's reaction. And being persuaded by the brothers was relatively smooth, and the performance in the killing process was not gauty, but just normal fear.
After the murder, he was completely reduced to a moral character in Dostoevsky's novels. Religious guilt constantly eroded his inner conscience, and then gradually moved towards self-destruction.
The process of watching the movie was a little difficult to adapt to, and I felt that there was a big gap.
If Colin is really a person with a strong sense of religious morality, he should not be easily persuaded to engage in this panicked murder plan, at least from the arrangement of the script, the scene of persuading Colin to become the executioner is too weak.
On the other hand, the first half of the film is a lot of preparation for the lives of the two brothers, which can be said to describe the shortcomings of their characters separately. The disadvantage of colin is that regardless of the gambling nature, debt and loan sharks block the underground game, and obsessed with satisfying their own psychological bottomless pit regardless of family interests. After he owed usury, he didn't even feel guilty and sad, but decadent and fearful. Nor does it seem like a character that would be burdened with religious morality.
Therefore, Woody Allen's focus should not be on Colin, nor does he intend to dwell on moral propositions. Rather, it is seizing the weakness of the small townspeople's character and attacking them violently with extreme events.
The film still develops the character of Ivan better: vanity, lust, ambition, willing to pay a high price for his achievements, and in the end he is still overwhelmed by the overwhelming troubles quickly derived from the vanity deep in his character, Also caught up with his brother. This is more of a Chekhovian satire of humanity than a moral drama.
But I liked the arrangement where Ivan finally poured the medicine into the beer bottle on the boat and then smashed it on the deck. It was more like a script ingenuity than handing the poisoned wine directly to Colin and then corpse underwater. It's a small overtake to match point.
