The film "The wages of fear" (the price of fear) lasted 2 and a half hours. I fell asleep in the first 30 minutes. I don't know if I was too sleepy or the plot was too slow. Anyway, I fell asleep. After waking up, I watched the boring first half of the movie again. I'm really glad I didn't give up the film at that time. The second half was so exciting that I couldn't even blink my eyes.

The story should take place in a small town in South America, a poor town, a hot town, but full of unemployed homeless people who can barely afford cheap soda... This poor town There is also a tavern. The tavern maid Linda's close friend Mario, Mario's roommate Cement worker Luigi, truck driver Bimba, and a fake rich man in a neat suit appeared one after another. They are completely different people, and what they have in common is that they both want to leave the town, but neither has the money to leave.

The opportunity finally came, and the oil well gas of the S.O.C company exploded. In order to put out the fire as quickly as possible, 900 liters of nitroglycerin had to be transported there. This is an extremely dangerous task. The truck has no safety equipment or corrective bumpers. Just the slightest bump, or a bit of heat, will destroy the person and the car. If you send the company's drivers, you will definitely be resolutely opposed by the union. Company owner O'Brien decides to hire the town's homeless. Because they don't have a union, they don't have a home, and if they get bombed, they won't get in trouble.

So Mario and Gio and Bimba and Luigi hit the road in two trucks. Life could disappear in a flash at any time, and fear engulfed their hearts: Bimba crushed a wine glass before leaving, and Gio in another car was chilled with fear, and even vomited. The car drove as slowly as a cripple walk; and Luigi even began to miss the "joy" of chatting with people in the tavern.

Humanity is revealed in this fear of losing one's life.

Mario and Gio had a close relationship before they set off because of their fellow countrymen. Mario had a little admiration for Gio, who was much older and dragged. Because Goo and Luigi, who live in a good relationship, quarreled, because Goo even refused to date Linda. When he was just on the road, Mario put a sweater on the trembling Goo and wiped the sweaty Goo. Khan... As the journey progressed, Gio's cowardly and self-preserving character gradually revealed. When Mario was on the suspension bridge and most wanted to help, Gio hid by himself and saw that the suspension bridge was about to collapse. , Gio closed his eyes aside. God favored Mario, the truck passed the customs smoothly, and the relationship between him and Gio took a turn. He cursed Gio as a coward and a coward.

On the contrary, the pair of Bimba and Luji were full of the spirit of mutual assistance from the very beginning. They chatted all the way, smoked cigarettes, played the harmonica, and faced each other when they encountered a thrilling situation. Crossing the suspension bridge, blasting rocks, and seeing that there was nothing to stop them, they all died together in a pool of crude oil when I was unprepared.

At this time, only Mario and Gio were left. In front of the crude oil pool, Gio flinched again and ran away. Mario caught up with him and threw the stone at him fiercely. They were two grasshoppers on a rope, and neither of them wanted to leave.

The crude oil pool is very deep, and it is impossible to stop halfway if you want to drive past it. Gio led the way in front, but he was caught by a branch. This time Mario did not hesitate and pressed Gio forward, but he was still unable to pass. Gio's leg was injured, he had been knocked down, but Mario did not, he did not give up, and finally passed the crude oil pool.

Getting closer and closer to success, Gio slept forever when he was nearing the end... Only Mario was blessed with a reward of 2,000 yuan. He triumphed like a hero. On the way back, he drove a truck and danced to waltz music. His excessive excitement caused him to crash into the parapet of the mountain road, fall off a cliff, and die with bloody hands tightly clutching the ticket home...

The end of the story In fact, it is not a waste of time to go back to the beginning of the story. Those plots have well paved the way for the characters, backgrounds, relationships and fates of these four people.

The able-bodied Luigi, an honest man who loved making friends, lived with Mario, cooked food for him, and washed his clothes. This friendship was destroyed due to the intervention of Gio, so there was the part where Luigi and Gio faced off in the tavern.

It turns out that the gun-toting Gio has the upper hand, and his ferocity in the first half of the film seems to contradict the cowardice of the second half. If you think about it carefully, this may be caused by his age. As he gets older and has experienced a lot of things, he is naturally more cautious and more afraid of death than young people.

If Gio finally gets the 2,000 yuan, he will never fall off the cliff; if Mario is accompanied by a Gio in the end, he can return to Linda happily.

There are a few more interesting points in the film:
1) It begins with a close-up of a group of busy cockroaches, the street is full of puddles, vehicles drive by, and the mud splatters. Tramps everywhere, little kids in ragged clothes... Noisy, rundown, a barbaric and savage place unfolds before us.
2) In small towns, people of color run pubs, but white people work and lose their jobs.
3) The pub maid Linda is very sexy! It's a pity she has absolutely no place in this man's film.
4) The rendering of the atmosphere of the film is undoubtedly very successful. The most impressive part is the part of blasting rocks. Bimba poured out the nitroglycerin slowly along the branches, panting, with slightly trembling hands, sweaty; the three companions in the distance, Gio's hand knocking on the truck door, Luigi chewing on the butt of his cigarette, Ma. Leo flicked the hand of the matchbox, and the tension of the sword was suffocating.

Watched three French films in a row in the last few weeks: Angel's Promise, Before Nightfall, and The Price of Fear, all wonderful. Different from Hollywood films, French films always show the theme of life in a hurry, and it is even more memorable afterward.

The Wages of Fear quotes

  • Dick: When I was a kid, I used to see men go off on this kind of jobs... and not come back. When they did, they were wrecks. Their hair had turned white and their hands were shaking like palsy! You don't know what fear is. But you'll see. It's catching, it's catching like small pox! And once you get it, it's for life! So long, boys, and good luck.

  • Mario: When someone else is driving, I'm scared.
