The story is familiar to us, about a loser of love & life, and a winner of respect and melody. With some kind of poetic air, Ian was destined to be an unusual man, destined to be mistaken, destined to be a dead man . The story is that he loves PUNK crazily, gets merried early, join a band named Warsaw (later become Joy Division) as a lead singer. Joy Division gets signed to Tony Wilson's Factory Record with an unprecedent contract of 50/50 and absolutely freedom . Then the band tours around while Ian fall in love with a French journalist. He catches epilepsy during a cold the tour. The depression of love and work overwhelms him again and again, then he takes his life as lovers often do. And headaches and heart breaks...
Love will tear us apart was written in the middle of his marriage crisis. He loves his wife for sure, yet the long tour, the tedious family life and endless performance really upset him, turned him to the French girl which lead him to destruction of body and soul.
Such stories isn't really ordinary in the rock'N'roll scene, however, Ian becomes a lenge for his peotic mind and his dark lyric approach. His voice is like hell, deep, dark, with completely desolation like a desert. Gothic, Post-Punk, even Post world I should say! Now that Ian is in another world looking up or down at us, is he satisfied with this story-telling movie? I'm not sure, one thing is certain , his followers including most of XFM's DJ choose it as Movie of the year! My taste in darkness will always left a little space for the dark knight!
So long, so well, Mr. Curtis!
