"CODA Musical Melody / Listening Girl"
Adapted from the 2014 French film "The Berry Family", "The Listening Girl", director Xia An used his own creations to re-moisten the story. Be my own favorite heartwarming coming-of-age story movie of 2021.
Xia An has learned half of American Sign Language from adapting the script, finding re-framed shooting scenes, characters and family background settings and breaking through the frame of casting. And the heroine Emilia Jones also spent nine months learning sign language and was able to perform very fluent sign language in the play. This is the fruitful achievement of the participants in the successful creation of the film and the accumulation of time.
I remember watching the interview with the heroine Ruby, where she mentioned a scene in the play when she came home after the school concert and sat in the truck with her father Frank (Troy Cosul) in the front yard. He sang the song performed on stage: You're All I Need to Get By. He stroked the pulse of Ruby's neck to feel the rhythm of the music flowing. And Ruby's eyes filled with tears softly singing for her father under the stars. Ruby said that when the filming ended, Troy told her in sign language, "He would give anything in his life in exchange for hearing her sing this song." Xia An, who was on the side, couldn't help crying. And this scene is my favorite clip. I watched the movie many times, and I couldn't help but be moved to tears every time.
Every family has its own language, and no matter how it is expressed, it shows the power of love. That love includes sacrifice, devotion, courage, care, and tenderness. No matter what flaws or gaps in life or life, only love can soothe each other's hearts.
I really like the professional actors of the three family members. Although they are all hearing-impaired, they have been honing and working hard in their acting careers, so they have a very mature, profound and delicate actor's perspective, and the emotions expressed by their body movements. Especially full and lively. The tacit understanding has forged the optimistic and clear character of all characters. It is also one of the keys to the success of CODA.
The gap between the hearing-impaired and the hearing-impaired is not the obstacle or coordination of language communication, but the cowardice and distrust of each other's emotional expression. However, if you get up and walk out of one world, you can enter another world. As long as you believe in the true love in the world, hold a rose in your hand, sing a song for him, or hug with open arms, you will usher in a new beginning.
