The story takes place in a remote village in northern Turkey, where religion and tradition rule people's ideology, and teenage girls become victims. Through the perspective of the youngest sister, Lalei, the film briefly tells the life of the five sisters, with a heart-to-heart.
At the beginning of the movie, the girls say goodbye to Direk, the female teacher, who is going to Istanbul. Afterwards, the five girls and several male classmates came to the beach to play. They play games while riding on the necks of boys, their clothes are all wet. Five girls also broke into an orchard to pick apples, only to be found by their owner and shot away with a gun.
When the girls return home, their grandmother's punishment awaits them. Because the girl and boy were frolicking in the sea and were seen by the neighbor Mrs. Pater, Mrs. Pater called her grandma to tell the story. In their eyes, a girl's body and a boy's skin-to-skin relationship is a great shame.
Grandma thought it was too shameful for the girls to do so, and she caught them and taught them one by one. "The scandal you did, sitting on the shoulders of the boys, the whole village knows that if you are broken and lose your virginity, no one wants you when you grow up and get married, and you will be kicked out of the house."
The five sisters, Sonay, Thelma, Ajay, Noor and Lale, complained loudly. "We just stole a few apples." Noor, she said that I have sat on a chair with my buttocks. Did I lose my virginity and have to burn the chair. Rush into the yard to burn the chairs. The youngest girl, Laleigh, took everyone to the neighbor's Mrs. Pater's house to settle accounts, and Mrs. Patter happened to come back. Laleigh reprimanded Mrs. Pat for being a false saint. Grandma taught Lale a lesson and apologized to Mrs. Pat.
When the uncle came back at night, he reprimanded them all the time. He wanted to clean up the three eldest girls, but was stopped by grandma. Grandma lamented that the girls' parents died early, and it was not easy for her to raise five granddaughters by herself. The next day, their uncle drove them to the town hospital to check on the three older sisters, Sonay, Thelma, and Edge, to see if they had lost their virginity.
Although it turned out that the girls were still virgins, the grandmother and uncle became more and more worried. They lost their right to go to school, and grandma confiscated anything that would make them bad, jeans, phones, computers, even chewing gum. Contact with the outside world was completely cut off. They think these things will degrade girls. Locking the door, the house became a prison for the five sisters.
Locked at home and not allowed to go out, the girl Lalei swatted flies bored, and the sisters played with each other to pass the time. Grandma also took the initiative to teach girls how to cook and instruct them to do housework, turning the house into a "wife processing factory". Lalei looked out from the window of her home. Boys came to harass her from time to time. The big slogan "Sonay, belongs to me!" was painted in red paint on the road. Uncle was so angry that he quickly painted it with white paint. Then, put iron bars on the windows to stop them from going through the windows.
However, with such strict control, the girls also find their own fun. They create their own food, tear open their ugly coats to reveal their sexy thighs, and show their youthful atmosphere everywhere. Obviously, the girls' hearts can't be controlled, and the parents are doomed to be in vain.
The eldest sister, Sonay, was the first to break through the bondage. Boy Akin throws the ball of paper up to Sonay. In the evening she crawled out of the window to date Aikin and returned late. The femininity of the eldest sister infected Lalei. Lale put on the eldest sister's bra, stuffed something stinky inside, and was chased by her sister.
Laleigh is a fan, and she asked her uncle to take her to a football match, but the uncle did not agree. Laleigh is bored at home watching soap operas with her grandmother's group. She gets up to find her uncle who is drinking with the men. Lale saw the enthusiastic girls at the football match on TV, and she felt envious.
The girls in the village are going to take the bus to the stadium to watch the football together. Unable to resist the temptation, the five sisters sneaked out of the window. However, they missed the bus. With the help of the passing truck driver Xinya, they caught up with the bus and came to the stadium smoothly. In the evening, my grandmother was watching TV with the women in the village. Suddenly, seeing these crazy granddaughters of a live football match, she was so frightened that she hurriedly cut off the power supply at home, so that the uncles in the courtyard and the others could not see that Aunt Amin smashed the electric switch at home and used stones The power box was smashed, resulting in a power outage in the whole village and no way to watch TV. She was trying to help the girls escape.
When the girls returned home, they were surprised to find that they had not been punished. The next day, the workers came to the home to raise the walls and install iron guardrails for the windows, completely turning the home into a prison.
The bored Lalei was playing ball alone, while her sisters were wearing underwear and basking in the sun at home. Grandma also realized that shutting down girls is not a long-term solution, so she started to marry them out one after another. The young man Osman and his mother came to propose a marriage. Sonay told his grandmother that his sweetheart was Akin and would not marry anyone else. Grandma was helpless, so she arranged for the second child, Selma, to have a blind date with Osman. The parents of both parties soon confirmed the marriage.
Soon, Ai Jin's family also came to propose marriage. So, all of a sudden, the two eldest granddaughters are ready to get married. The grandmother packed the dowry for the girl who was going to marry, and put a "Guide to Sexual Affairs" on it.
The passive Selma is introverted by nature, in stark contrast to the outgoing and bold Sonay. Sonay found happiness through his own rebellion. The honest Selma was not so lucky. She didn't like this Ottoman, but she had no choice but to obey her grandmother and uncle.
On the night that Sonay and Selma both held their wedding, grandma closed the courtyard door as she wanted to give the bride-to-be a slap in the face. Unexpectedly, Sonay couldn't wait to rush out to open the courtyard door and threw himself into Ai Jin's arms. At the wedding, Sonay and Akin are excited, while Thelma is scowling and drinking. It was clear that Thelma did not want to marry Ottoman.
When Lale finds Selma crying secretly, she persuades her sister to flee to Istanbul. Selma said that she could not drive and could not escape, so she could only endure the reality silently.
The next morning, Selma and her husband's wedding night did not bleed, and her in-laws suspected that she was not a virgin and took her to the hospital for examination. She lay down in a sluggish manner, and the male doctor asked her if she had done it before. She said I have done it with the whole world. After examination, the hymen was intact. The male doctor said that even if you are pregnant, the hymen is still intact, but I don't understand why you say that you have done it with the whole world. Selma said lightly, I said I never did, who would believe me.
After marrying off the two eldest granddaughters, the grandmother began to play the third child Aijie's idea again. Edger was taken aback. Grandma thought she was already married when Edger was her age. So, the person who proposed to Ajie quickly came to the door. Laleigh was very angry and secretly spit into the prepared coffee. Edger thinks his sister is rude and pushes her out the door.
In a fit of rage, the little girl Lalei walked on the road wearing slippers, she wanted to go to Istanbul. The truck driver Xinya passed by and persuaded her to go home. When Laleigh came home, she felt like a lunatic asylum. Locked up at home, Lale can only pretend to play by the sea with Nuer. Lalei secretly taught herself to drive in her uncle's car, and she was already preparing for her escape.
Aijie's fear of marriage finally made Aijie make a surprising move. The uncle drove three girls into town on errands and left them in the car. A lad came over and struck up a conversation with Edge. When Noor and Lale got out of the car, Aijie told them to pay attention to his uncle. Immediately, Aijie and the young man closed the window and had sex in the car, and asked his sister to help him keep watch. When the uncle came back, he found nothing. In the evening, the boy from the day chased the house and shouted Aijie's name downstairs.
Edger was dragged into the room by his uncle and beaten, and Edger jumped out of the window to his death. Rather than saying that Aijie resisted marriage with death, it is better to say that this is Aijie's unexplainable lament.
During the day, Lale saw Xinya drive by and slipped down to let Xinya teach her to drive, because she could never teach herself. When Lale climbed back from the window, she was hit by her grandmother. Grandma hired an electric welder to weld the windows to death. And just like that, the only way out was blocked.
Lalei didn't want to repeat the painful fate of the two sisters, and planned for herself without making a sound. She quietly saved money and asked Xinya to teach her to drive. She began to do the preparatory work: cut her hair and sew it on the pillow as a disguise; stole grandma's money from the cupboard; and found out the address of Teacher Dilek in Istanbul from the book. And the danger looms even closer. Grandma actually decided to marry Nuer, who was just 14 years old. Soon the person who proposed the marriage came to the door. Lalei can't bear it anymore and desperately wants to escape from this home.
Lale persuades Noor to flee to Istanbul together. On the night of the wedding, Lalei took the opportunity to shut everyone out, leaving herself and Nuer inside the house, blocking the door with her home. People outside tried to come in, but were blocked by the guardrails they set up. The two of them locked the door, blocked the heavy objects, sealed the windows, and made everyone anxious outside. Grandma didn't know what to do, and her uncle, who felt disgraceful, was even more angry. Lale calls Xinya for help. The uncle took the trouble to break through the window, and the two girls took the opportunity to slip through the front door and drove away.
Xinya picked them up halfway and put them on the coach to Istanbul. After a bumpy ride, they came to Istanbul when the Bosphorus appeared out of the car window. They followed the address to Mr. Dilake's house. When Lale saw the teacher, she immediately jumped into the teacher's arms.
Adolescent girls are unable to control their bodies, and even more unable to control their desires. All the restraints on freedom in human nature are anti-human and doomed to only have catastrophic consequences.
The eldest sister Sonayi is like a warm and charming red rose. She is bold, even if she is locked at home, she dares to climb down from the small window of the room in the middle of the night to have a private meeting with her lover. Dare to fight with her grandmother and not bow to an arranged marriage is due to Sonayi's yearning for love and freedom. She fought for it bravely and married the person she liked as she wished.
The second sister, Selma, is like Maruha Kikyo, and she is born to give in. She yearns for freedom, but her cowardice prevents her from escaping the feudal cruelty. Instead of Sonayi, she married a strange man and accepted an absurd marriage. When the fifth sister, Lalei, asked her why she didn't run away, she said, "Where can I escape? It's 4,000 kilometers away from Istanbul!" She longed for Istanbul, a symbol of liberation, but reality beat her back.
The third sister, An Jie, is the black other side flower. When a person feels hopeless, there is only one way left, and going to death seems to be the best choice. She despises arranged marriages and male chauvinism, and she chooses to be openly with men to show her defiance and mockery of traditional ideas. But in the end, she was unable to get out of the predicament. Although she resisted, she could not get the freedom of the body. In the end, she chose to release her soul and denounce the cruel reality of feudalism with self-destruction.
The two youngest sisters, Nuer and Lale, are like sunflowers who will always follow the sun. They are obsessed with pursuing the ideal in their hearts - freedom, and are not afraid of any difficulties. When the opportunity came, they dared to act, secretly approached the truck driver to learn to drive, took their grandmother's money, stole their uncle's car keys, quietly climbed out of the fence, started his uncle's car, and finally took a coach to Istanbul. At the end of the movie, they finally came to Istanbul, a world where they could breathe freely, where they found their former teacher, and they will be reborn and live out themselves.
