The director’s crazy dream: combining art and technology to tell a wonderful story

"Walking in the Clouds" tells the real experience of French acrobatic celebrity Philip Pat (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). In 1974, he hired a group of people to help him realize his unique and dangerous dream—— Walk the steel cable at 417 meters above the ground between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

This real-life story has earlier been filmed into an excellent Oscar-winning documentary "The Tightrope Walker". So why is this story worth telling again? In addition to preaching that people can overcome all difficulties, persevere, take risks, and bravely accomplish the crazy things they want to do in order to realize their dreams. What is the purpose of the director?

What I want to say is: Director Robert Zemigis is also realizing his crazy dream! He has been working hard to find greater possibilities for film narratives, constantly trying to combine cutting-edge special effects, computer animation and other digital technologies with unique and imaginative stories. Director Robert Zemigis has filmed "Back to the Future" series, "Forrest Gump", "Remains of a Deserted Island"... and many other classic movies that are well received and popular. In his works: such as the "Back to the Future" trilogy, there are many interesting sci-fi plots; another example is "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", which pioneered the combination of real-life performance and animation, and inspired a Trends; and "Forrest Gump", using CGI technology to put the protagonist into a series of famous historical fragments. In addition, there are his informal animation trilogy ("Polar Express", "Beowulf", "A Christmas Carol"), which all use digital motion capture technology to present the fantasy color of the story itself.

"Walking in the Clouds" undoubtedly embodies the high level of mainstream film production and viewing experience. He told a touching story with the latest technology! Let the audience experience a shocking experience that they cannot experience elsewhere. Although 3D and IMAX effects are not the core of the film, Zemigis has used these two techniques to achieve the purpose of serving the film itself, and it is better than any other film in 2015. These are all worth buying a ticket to go to the cinema to enjoy his work. It is also worth the Chinese filmmakers to observe and learn!

The effect of IMAX 3D is very good. The balance bar in the hands of Ji Cerf fell off and I thought I was going to get it into my eyes. People with acrophobia still don't look at it. My palms are sweating all the time, even though I know it is a special effect! It’s still an inspirational movie. If you don’t go crazy, you can’t survive. Dreams are really the best motivation.

The Walk quotes

  • [last lines]

Philippe Petit: You remember Guy Tozzoli from the press conference, one of the men behind the creation of towers, he loved the walk, and he gave me a pass to the observation deck, so I could go any time I wanted. And I went there many times, alone. I would find myself there looking at the void, to see how the thought comes back. How the feeling returns. Because it was a beautiful day.

Philippe Petit: And you know this pass I was given?

    [holding up the card]

Philippe Petit: Well, these passes they have a date on them. A date when they expire. But on my pass, Mr. Tozzoli, he crossed out the date and he wrote on it: FOREVER.

  • Petit's Father: [sigh] My son, the circus clown.
