The work is awesome
First of all, the whole work is promoted by the change of space and the change of characters. Let’s talk about space first. There are three places: my own apartment, my daughter’s apartment, and a nursing home. The director deliberately made these places strikingly similar. Don't talk nonsense, go to the picture
We can feel it very intuitively. But to be honest, I didn't feel that there was a difference between warm and cool colors, and I guess the director didn't want you to know how the apartment changed. This increases the suspense of the work.
Besides people, five main characters. The old man, the big-eyed daughter, the long-faced nurse, the long-term nanny who misses the younger daughter, the bald man, and the curly-haired man. The old man couldn't tell the relationship between them, until he finally revealed the answer.
The old man was scolded by two different men twice, indicating that the old man remembered that he was indeed rejected by his son-in-law. He did not forget those hurtful words.
The young woman was wounded in the hospital at the end, and she was dying, indicating that the old man did have a little daughter, but she died early because of an accident. Of course, the painting on the fireplace also expresses the old man's yearning for his little daughter. The explanation of these places is quite clear.
Besides the watch, the watch is a very important clue, and the old man has been looking for the watch. The foreign language of the movie is that the father's Chinese translation is "father trapped in time", which may also have something to do with the watch. But in the end, the old man did not wear a watch when he was in the hospital. This should be to say that the old man has been lost in time.
And the chairs in the hallway
It is also very clear that he wants to express that the old man confuses his apartment with the hospital.
And the door, which can be said to be the focus of the movie. It seems like it might be different every time you open the door. The director actually increased the suspense of the work through the door.
At the end of the story, when my daughter came out of the nursing home, a black half-face sculpture stood in front of me, which made me feel a strong sense of depression.
Finally, let's talk about Hopkins' performance, which is really awesome. I am most impressed by three places. One is that when he and Laura first met, he happily tap danced, and at that moment I thought he was a lovely old man with a childlike heart. The second is that he is helpless and pitiful when he is slapped by a man. In the end, he cried like a child in the hospital. It can be said that he pushed the helplessness and pain to a climax and made it difficult to calm down for a long time.
Of course, there are two places I don't understand.
First, why is there a scene where the daughter will strangle the old man, is it because the daughter hates the old man or the old man is afraid that the daughter will strangle him, that is just an illusion. And what we can know is that the daughter is really kind to the old man, taking him to see a doctor, buying him chicken for dinner, and sending him postcards. But why is there such an out of place part.
The second reason is why I can't see the photo in front of the old man's bed. There are obviously three people in that photo. If you use photos to explain, you can also make the audience understand the relationship between several characters earlier. Mainly because I feel that the time and space of the entire work has been changing, and I need important clues to rationalize my thoughts.
