Happy Valley

When I commented on "Golden Jade League", I said that the movies of that era believed in pure love, and today we no longer do such silly things. Even if we want to do it, we can’t do it. We don’t believe anyone is so innocent. In a movie, if there is only pure love, then we must feel that it is pretending to be a wolf with a big tail. Therefore, the director of "Night Sleep in Seattle" said that his movie was a tribute to the love in the movie.

What about the earlier silent film era or the black and white era? Will love and life be more pure and beautiful? Beatles is not saying "Yesterday, All my trouble seems far away".

The movie "Happy Valley" said, no, such a simple life is not happy. Her poster says "Nothing is as simple as black and white."

Things have never been so simple. People who turn the world into black and white are just deceiving themselves and idealizing the world. And the single world, no matter how noble she looks, will not make people feel happy.

I know that "Happy Valley" is only advocating everyone to be true to themselves. Don't cover yourself with a set of ideal standards. The hypothetical time in the small town was 1958, which coincided with the eve of the great liberation of the mind in the United States. What the movie refers to is actually very clear, there is not much novelty, and it is far from a great movie.

But there are some plots in this movie that make me feel a bit familiar.

When some people in that black and white town discovered their true self in their hearts, the things around them and themselves became colorful. This makes the people in the town who are still black and white very dissatisfied.

So these people gathered together, broke the colorful soda shop, and burned the new books in the library.

After that, the mayor gathered everyone together and said that we should be peaceful and not use violence. Then a new code of conduct was issued.

The core of this code of conduct is to maintain stability and create a harmonious society. It is forbidden to see harmonious books, not to listen to uneasy music, and not to paint in colors other than black, white and gray.

They thought that this would change the world back to black and white.

Finally, the actor tells them that those colors come from everyone's heart, and no one has the right to stop it, and it can't be stopped at all.

IMDB scored 7.5 (29156 people voted), I scored 7.

Pleasantville quotes

  • Skip: I'll see you at school, Mary Sue.

[Jennifer smiles as Skip drives away]

    Jennifer: Who's that?

David: Skip Martin, captain of the basketball team.

    Jennifer: Does he like me?

David: As a matter of fact, he does.

    [Jennifer's smile turns slightly lecherous]

  • [the geography teacher uses a pointer to demonstrate, on the classroom blackboard, the world of Pleasantville, which consists of Elm Street, Main Street, and the Town Hall]

Miss Peters: Last week, class, we discussed the geography of Main Street. This week we're going to be talking about Elm Street. Now, can anyone tell me the difference between Elm Street and Main Street? Tommy.

    Tommy: It's not as long?

Miss Peters: That's right, Tommy, it's not as long. Also, it only has houses, so the geography of Main Street is different than the geography of Elm Street.

[Jennifer is frowning in bewilderment. She raises her hand]

    Miss Peters: Mary Sue!

Jennifer: Yeah. What's outside of Pleasantville?

[the entire class turns to look at her]

    Miss Peters: I don't understand.

Jennifer: Outside of Pleasantville? Like, what's at the end of Main Street?

Miss Peters: [chuckles and shakes her head] Mary Sue. You should know the answer to that! The end of Main Street is just the beginning again.

[the teacher points at the intersection of Elm and Main. The class feels released to giggle at Jennifer/Mary Sue's clearly stupid question, and Jennifer frowns again]
