I didn't expect it to be so serious

The reason for watching the movie: I saw a recommendation in the main mirror of up before, but I have never watched it. Picked it up this time.

Summary: empathy, surprise

In fact, there are many such parents around, who see their children not studying well, playing games, TikTok, and Kuaishou all day long, and they hate it. But no matter how persuaded, the child will not be obedient. But the truth is much more than a minor injury on the surface. Research shows that the main harm is in three areas: mental health, democracy, discrimination.

Mental Health Dilemma:

A study of 5,000 people found that higher social media use was associated with greater declines in self-reported physical and mental health and life satisfaction — American Journal of Epidemiology, 2017

Democratic Dilemma:

The number of countries running political disinformation campaigns on social media has doubled in the past two years. — The New York Times, 2019

Discrimination Dilemma:

64% of people who joined extremist groups on Facebook did so because algorithms directed them there.

In terms of mental health, I can see it from my sister. On the one hand, my mother likes a strict education method and pays more attention to appearance. In addition, the younger sister compares her classmates with the filter photos of Xiaohongshu and other platforms, which is more serious. It should have been the happiest and most happy childhood, but the greatest happiness is obtained from platforms such as Douyin and Kuaishou. From high school, the teacher said that you are addicted to Douyin, and it will only recommend things you are interested in. After brushing it down, I don't remember anything. Since then, I have realized this more and more. So more through reading, watching movies to get. In the same way, I actually think that TV dramas, unless they are particularly warm and express strong values, are more meaningful, and others are not worth spending so much time wasting attention. I have always felt that my time is precious and that I have to do more and more meaningful things. But sometimes when I get tired of studying, I have no self-control, so I just follow my habit of surfing the circle of friends, this and that. In fact, it would be better if I listen to music, look at the scenery outside, and take a proper rest. It is not our own problem to fail to achieve our goals, but everything needs to be done step by step. Others are our role models and believe that we can achieve it one day, but it takes practice, right?

As for the democratic dilemma and discrimination dilemma, these are actually our country due to the leadership of a political party. Coupled with better policies, these situations did not harm us. However, Hong Kong independence and Taiwan independence keep appearing. Although these are bigger problems, we should also have our own thinking and opinions through some non-fast-moving consumer goods.

It is more clear that capital is contrary to the original intention of people. As a programmer, I always envy that Byte and Kuaishou can have such high profits, but the business model under this capital is to treat people as commodities and sell them to advertisers. People's attention is money. I used to think oh, this business model is really good, it allows us to acquire knowledge without paying. But I think the business model of station B is very different from these. It does not force watching programs, earning part of advertising revenue, and commissions from people's coins. What I need to improve is: I don't look at the recommendations on the homepage, nor just look at life, study, and fitness up. (Sometimes you can indeed recommend some good products, so the up master who must grow and improve is worthy of attention)

The issue is:

  1. There is no realistic communication, mutual distrust
  2. Extreme: only look at those who agree with you, regardless of the information that goes against you; face violent verbal attacks
  3. Facing the Threat of Death: Collapsing Society That Can't Heal Itself
    1. Distrust each other, listen to rumors that are irresponsible, lose people's hearts and lose judgment. civil war.
  4. Platforms: Competition for your attention
  5. Response: Ubanto, Destruction
  6. 6.1 Legislation and regulation: harm analogies to organ trafficking, slave human beings,
    1. 6.2 Companies show us their profitable ads instead of focusing on things that align our lives, our values

do it:

  1. turn off all notifications
  2. Do not accept recommended content, only watch what you want to see
  3. use quarks
  4. Seeing a message, staying awake, is the goal of triggering your emotions.
  5. Do it yourself, fight: Remember that every time you click a link, you are creating benefits for the system.
  6. Focus on different people, diversity, people with perspectives that differ from their own
  7. family
    1. 7.1 Half an hour before going to bed, take away electronic devices
    2. 7.2 No use of social media until the age of 16
    3. 7.3 Study the time principle with your child, how long do you want to spend: usually it is more reasonable to say

The Social Dilemma quotes

  • Justin Rosenstein - Facebook, Former Engineer: We live in a world in which a tree is worth more, financially, dead than alive, in a world in which a whale is worth more dead than alive. For so long as our economy works in that way and corporations go unregulated, they're going to continue to destroy trees, to kill whales, to mine the earth, and to continue to pull oil out of the ground, even though we know it is destroying the planet and we know that it's going to leave a worse world for future generations. This is short-term thinking based on this religion of profit at all costs, as if somehow, magically, each corporation acting in its selfish interest is going to produce the best result. This has been affecting the environment for a long time. What's frightening, and what hopefully is the last straw that will make us wake up as a civilization to how flawed this theory has been in the first place, is to see that now we're the tree, we're the whale. Our attention can be mined. We are more profitable to a corporation if we're spending time staring at a screen, staring at an ad, than if we're spending that time living our life in a rich way. And so, we're seeing the results of that. We're seeing corporations using powerful artificial intelligence to outsmart us and figure out how to pull our attention toward the things they want us to look at, rather than the things that are most consistent with our goals and our values and our lives.
