back to the ocean

magic ocean

After watching the film, I repeatedly thought about four words in my mind: "man and nature". When did the separation of man and nature begin? After billions of years of natural selection and evolution, the earth's creatures finally choose their respective habitats and forms, which are all natural.

When the photographer's hand was connected to Miss Octopus' tentacles, my brain traveled backwards and returned to the invertebrate state of holding my head with my hands behind the mother's body - at that moment, I felt that I was back to nature, back to the ocean.

In order to get closer to the marine life and get closer to the natural state, the photographer decided to go to the sea without an oxygen cylinder or a diving suit. The South African waters he chose were not deep, and he called the world under the sea "misty forest" - misty forest. The photographer’s narration taught me to let go of my defenses, and it’s not like watching the animal world just to see the animals while ignoring the colorful ecological environment.

The underwater world is even more exciting than the road. There are forests, reefs, and a biological chain of "mantis catching cicadas and oriole behind". Under the sea, kelp rippling with ocean currents. For photographers who have visited many times, all animals He is also regarded as an "immigrant" living here. We choose to come into this world, we were born as one.

Some people say that the three most amazing beings in the world are the universe, the ocean floor and the brain. The drowning experience in my childhood made me have a natural fear of water, and I liked the sea but never dared to get close to the sea. I can't understand someone's love for snorkeling. Today's story under the sea makes me fascinated by the seabed. The ocean covers 78% of the earth's surface, and the seabed has a more wonderful world than the land.

Octopus Adventure

The photographer was exploring the seabed in the foggy forest, and the old residents were full of fear and curiosity about the inexplicably visited behemoth. The protagonist of the story, Miss Octopus, appeared in a unique way, attracting the attention of the photographer - on the bottom of the sea, an object covered with shells was stationary, and the surrounding small fish were also attracted to her, when she noticed that the intruder did not attack her. Attacking, she flew away in a single step, got into the kelp bush, wrapped herself with agile tentacles and suckers, and observed the environment with vigilant eyes.

At this time, all my curiosity was mobilized, octopus is such a smart and interesting creature.

As mollusks, octopuses are the targets of many predators in the dangerous underwater world. After millions of years of evolution, octopuses living alone have higher IQs than cats and dogs, even close to the lower animals among primates. Lone Rangers at the bottom of the sea have a natural vigilance against the external environment.

The photographer disarmed the octopus patiently, visited calmly every day, and placed the camera near the cave of Miss Octopus. Miss Octopus was on guard, holding the shell as a shield and approaching the camera, using the tentacle suction cup to explore this cold foreign object, first stretched out one tentacle to test, one suction cup, two suction cups... Slowly felt, and found that "human and animal are harmless." "After that, I sucked it up and played. The suckers of octopuses are like human fingers with senses, and more than 2,000 suckers on the body are very flexible.

After many visits, the photographer may already have a name in the mind of Miss Octopus. He is not surprised by this visitor. Once he sees the photographer, he will hide in the cave and leave all tentacles behind him and be ready to evacuate at any time. . The photographer stretched out her hand and pointed to Miss Octopus. She also stretched out a tentacle like she used to explore the camera, and then used the sucker to feel this strange creature. The human temperature may have given her a deeper trust. This time, the cross-species holding hands are in my heart. There is a warm current, what is nature, this is nature.

Hi human friends.

After establishing trust with Miss Octopus, the photographer was able to observe normal octopus life. Under the sea, she is unpredictable.

She is disguised as a reef, and her body color is the same as the environment; she walks lightly, like wearing a floor-length dress, and walks on the seabed with two tentacles; she jets forward quickly, her head forward, and her tentacles retracted into a bullet. She preyed on shrimps and crabs with sufficient patience and a hard-to-play strategy, and learned from her experience in the failure of predation. After a shrimp escaped from her net, she learned to surround the prey from top to bottom.

goodbye octopus

The photographer saw a peculiar phenomenon on the bottom of the sea. The octopus lady, who usually lives alone and cold, throws off her long tentacles and chases fish in the sea. At a social event, she stretched out her tentacles to cover the photographer's hand and hugged him in his arms. This is the real The Shape of Water. This is also the last hug between the photographer and Miss Octopus.

The lady octopus mates with the male octopus to lay eggs. In the cave, she never comes out to hunt. She is getting weaker and weaker and uses a siphon to deliver energy to the octopus eggs. Returning to death is the end of all life on earth, and reproduction is the code engraved in biological genes. To prolong life with the last power of life, this is the choice made by Miss Octopus, whose life span is only more than 400 days.

When the photographer finally saw Miss Octopus, she was weak and sank to the bottom of the sea. Small fish and shrimp ate away at her body. She did not hide or resist. .

More than 300 days of company, farewell friends.

I was born in Sri Lanka, and I died in Sri Lanka. More than 400 days, a wonderful octopus.

My Octopus Teacher quotes

  • Craig Foster: What she taught me was to feel... that you're part of this place, not a visitor. That's a huge difference.

  • [first lines]

Craig Foster: A lot of people say an octopus is like an alien. But the strange thing is, as you get closer to them, you realize that we're very similar in a lot of ways.
