Give me liberty or give me death

Dega has always been seeking stability. He only wanted to live on Alcatraz but survived, but when Papillon asked him if he wanted to go together, he still agreed. I think this is the highest state of a friend. Even if you disagree with the other's behavior, you will still support him next to him. The escape from prison seemed like an outing to these two trembling old men who had experienced many battles. When Papillon said he was leaving, Dega was thinking of bringing some carrots.

When Papillon came up with the third escape method, Dega once asked "You think it would work?" Papillon answered "Does it matter?" It doesn't matter to him to die, but if he lives, he must be free, and procrastination is totally unacceptable. I think if everyone thinks this way, the world might be a better place. It is because many people hold that it is better to die than to live, so they can endure a lot of things in order to survive, turning a blind eye to sin, and even helping them to abuse them.

There is another sentence I like very much, "Hey you bastards, I'm still here.". Papillon said twice, the first time in the isolation prison, using the horizontal bar on the ceiling to do pull-ups. The second time in the sea, lying on the coconut shell. For someone who has treated you unfairly, the best revenge is to keep fighting.

Papillon quotes

  • Warden Barrot: Put all hope out of your mind. And masturbate as little as possible, it drains the strength!

  • Dega: Well, it now seems quite possible that until we get to a decent jail with bribeable guards, I may stand in some need of... rather close physical protection.

Papillon: That depends on how long you want to live.

    Dega: For a long time.

Papillon: Then you got a problem.

Dega: Well, I presume that you have some, uh, goals, some particular need that outrates all the others. I mean, if so... may I aslk what it is?

    Papillon: Money!

    Dega: For what?

    Papillon: Escape.

Dega: Very good. You keep me alive until we land in Guiana, and I'll underwrite any escape you care to arrange.

Papillon: Escape for me, not for us!

    Dega: Oh, of course. I, I, I...

    [laughs]

Dega: . I have no intention, uh, of even attempting to escape - ever!

    Papillon: Done!
