About knowledge

He that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

The Bible says that to increase knowledge is to increase sorrow.

On the elegance and vulgarity of literature and art

How can you hate something if you've never read it? Isn't that like what repressive regimes do? You wanna burn books you don't like?

People who haven't even read "Little Times" have only heard other people's comments, what qualifications do they have to hate this book? Burning books and pit Confucianism?

These books make people happy. We don't always have to be thinking about poli-sci or reading Chaucer.

Some vulgar books make people happy, and no one wants to read politics or Chaucer every day.

-you are not supposed to like it.

-But then why read it?

You can't read it if you don't like it, but you don't have the right to let others not read it.

-Is it all about understanding different points of view?

-It's also about developing taste.

-that was snobby. You're a snob. you think it's cool to hate things. And it's not. it's boring. Talk about what you love and keep quiet about what you don't.

Does the world need diversity or taste? Maybe criticizing others because of your own greed?

-This country is in a bad shape. And it has to do, in large part, with people liking things that are very, very bad.

-Why are you the one who gets to decide what's good and bad?

-And do you only want to surround yourself with people who read the same books as you?

Art and thinking are not improved because of watching Douyin every day, but who decides whether Douyin is good or bad?

About caterpillars

Did you know there are so many preservatives in the food we eat that they're finding it's taking longer for our bodies to decompose once we die?

People often say that eating too many preservatives is not good, but they do not know that it slows down our body to rot.

At some point these sells show up called imaginal cells. Scientists don't know where they come from and why they appear but these imaginal cells show up inside the caterpillar and say, “get psyched, caterpillar! It's butterfly-turning-into time. "And what do all the other caterpillar cells do when imaginal cells show up? The attack them. Try to kill them. They're like, "screw you, imagine cells. We're happy being a caterpillar. Get lost!"Eventually the caterpillar turns into a butterfly. And that is why there is no reason to be afraid.

When a caterpillar wants to become a butterfly, the cells in the body will settle for the status quo, but no matter how much you resist, the caterpillar will eventually become a butterfly, right?

About Poetry

Life happened. I value discretion. I loathe the self pity. people are disappointing.

Life itself is like this, there is no cure for people, and we should move forward with caution rather than self-pity.

They were miserable men who were granted a few moments of transcendence. And they had the talent and foresight to grab pen and paper and write it down. Byron was probably the happiest of the lot, only because he put his dick in everything.

Poetry doesn't make you optimistic, it's a page full of nonsense written by a group of miserable people who have been gifted with a whim. Byron is already the happiest among them, because he goes up to everyone he sees, at least for a while now.

Get used to it. My advice to you is this. Put some armor around that gooey little heart of yours.

Put armor on your sentimental heart.

About escape

What if I'm like one of those prisoners that gets paroled and finds he can't handle life on the outside. So he commits a petty crime so he can go back to what he knows.

Life makes people have nowhere to run, you are like a parole fugitive, but you find yourself worthless back in society, you can only sin again and go back to the familiar prison.

Any place you don't leave is a prison.

Life is a prison.

About reading

I'm actually trying to read less. I felt like I wasn't watching enough television. I started to feel like reading about life was taking time away from actually living life. So I'm trying to like accept invitations to things, say hi to the world a little more.

Feeling life in a book is worse than living it directly, "Everyone dies, watch TV for a while."

About getting old

-You're getting wise.

-I'm getting old.

-not the same thing, I say you're getting wise. You worry about getting old?

-I think being old's gonna be okay. It's just getting there that kicks your ass.

-you're going to be a great old guy.

-I think you're going to be a great old person, too.

Getting older also means getting wiser.

Liberal Arts quotes

  • Jesse Fisher: I think one of the things I loved the most about being here was the feeling that anything was possible. It's just infinite choices ahead of you. You'd get out of school, and anything could happen. And then you do get out, and... life happens, you know'? Decisions get made. And then all those many choices you had in front of you are no longer really there. At a certain point, you just got to go, "Oh, I guess this is new its going down." And there's just something a little depressing about that.

  • Nat: Is your name... Ethan?

    Jesse Fisher: No, why?

Nat: You look like an Ethan to me.

Jesse Fisher: My name's not Ethan.

Nat: How cool would that be, if that was your name and I just, like, knew it?

    [Jesse shrugs]

Nat: Are you a student here?

Jesse Fisher: Uh, no, but thank you for thinking that. You?

Nat: Nah, man. Just here visiting a buddy of mine. It's not a bad place to kill a little time, huh? I'm Nat.

    Jesse Fisher: I'm Jesse.

Nat: Do you hear that music, Ethan?
