a cold romance

At first, I really didn't want to watch this movie, because I subconsciously thought that the picture quality and style of the early movies were really not what I could appreciate. But because I had to answer questions in class, I still insisted on reading it.

It has to be said that it is a very meaningful movie.

A lot of things are unimaginable in modern civilization, maybe it shouldn't be said in such a general way, the correct statement is, I have a hard time imagining how the Eskimos lived. For me, who is used to living in modern buildings, I think they are very survivable. This survivability contains the wisdom of the early people, which is very moving.

Their boat can accommodate a lot of people: I thought there was only one person rowing, but what was astounding was that in that unremarkable shot, another person after another magically emerged from the boat - a wife, two children ,puppy. I am very curious and want to know what the internal structure of the boat is like. Can people in the boat feel the cold sea water, and can such a cramped space be able to breathe well?

The hull is wrapped in seal skins, and the boat must be placed on an igloo during the night to prevent the sled dogs from eating the seal skins (the sled dogs are always hungry). The construction of the igloo is very wonderful. They used large blocks of snow bricks to build an ice and snow fortress. They carved a block out of the fortress and inlaid the ice blocks to use it as a window. After everyone entered the room, they used the snow bricks in the room. The entrance hole was blocked. (But I'm still curious if an igloo made of snow blocks will be very cold)

When people slept, they only took off their shirts and covered them with a thin layer of seal skin or whatever. But Nanook was wearing a pair of fur pants that looked fluffy. If you guessed correctly, it should be the fur of a polar bear.

In this film, I also saw arctic foxes, walruses. Unfortunately, no polar bears were seen. (I really like polar bears, so I feel very distressed when I think of their skins being peeled off, and I can’t bear to see the fur of arctic foxes, but my distress is for the residents living in such a harsh environment It's just a woman's kindness, after all, people can only consider other issues if they survive.)

In the film, I feel that people and nature are more inclined to a relationship between animals and nature - hunting, survival. As for life, I don't see much. Nowadays, people's survival situation is above nature, which has undoubtedly brought many evil consequences.

While watching, I kept thinking about the relationship between animals and people. However, my thinking is very narrow, I prefer to protect cute animals. Humans always seek advantages and avoid disadvantages. When the living space of human beings expands infinitely, the living space of other species is also shrinking all the time. I just hope that I can be greedy and not have too much desire. Respect life, every life is precious (people, animals, plants).

The sled dogs in the film are so pitiful, they don't eat much, and they suffer a lot of cold. Although my friend told me that they were hairy, I couldn't help feeling distressed. The environment we live in is so comfortable that it’s hard to appreciate the difficult life we used to live in. So, let's be content!

The film conveys a simple but romantic concept: willpower and an open-minded and optimistic attitude to life that can still survive tenaciously under difficult circumstances. Before reading books, it was really difficult for me to understand the concept of tenacious survival, but after watching this film, I understood it a little bit.

The teacher said that the director's handling of the film was romantic. Although people live a hard life, their spirits are rich and happy. Such a simple and simple life is what Flaherty yearns for. I don't know if there are still people who yearn for a hard and simple life. Anyway, I just want to be a silly dog, dog warmly in the bed.

No one really likes to suffer, right? I don't believe I don't believe it!

Nanook of the North quotes

  • Title Card: The most desired of all meat is that of seal. It affords the maximum of warmth and sustenance. The "blubber-eating Eskimo" is a misconception. Blubber they use as we use butter.

  • Title Card: The shrill piping of the wind, the rasp and hiss of driving snow, the mournful wolf howls of Nanook's master dog typify the melancholy spirit of the North.
