This is not only a same-sex movie, but also a compulsory course in family relations

First of all, I thought about how this family was formed. Jules went to the hospital for a sudden facial nerve palsy. At that time, a female doctor Nic treated her. The two attracted to each other changed from a medical relationship to a lover, and finally decided to enter into marriage and build a family together. One day Nic thought that a relationship could not be maintained without children or she just wanted to have children, so she gave birth to her daughter Joni. When Joni was three years old, the two considered for a long time, because Joni had to bear this unusual family as the background of her life. Should she face it alone? Maybe we should find a partner for Joni, Jules decided to apply to the sperm bank again, and then Joni had a younger brother Laser.

If The Kids Are All Right only tells how heterosexuals outside view homosexuality and their families, then this film will be a vulgar gay movie. Director Lisa Cholodenko does not think there is any difference between homosexuality and heterosexuality in family relationships. A good family relationship must be based on communication and love, regardless of whether the core of the family is a pair of parents or two mothers. At the beginning of the film, the family structure of Jules and Nic was in a stable state, and it was not until Joni left home to go to university before there might be factors causing change.

Little did he know that the adult Joni made his own proposal to contact the sperm donor Paul for a while. I can't forget the awkwardness when Paul and Joni met. The two sides showed kindness but also had reservations. There was a subtle tension in the interaction. Is this because of the cowardice brought about by the blood relationship? Or their habitual defenses from gay families. Obviously, they were looking forward to meeting with Paul, but they all retracted after meeting him. The two brothers and sisters took turns to introduce each other to Paul, as if they wanted to cover up the predicament of being unable to talk with Paul generously.

In the middle of the film, Paul almost replaced Nic as the axis of the family. At the dinner scene at Paul’s house, director Lisa Cholodenko helped Paul do some pre-dinner preparations through Jules, Joni, and Laser, while Nic watched it alone. The mirror position arrangement of Paul's vinyl collection shows this point. The transformation process of the axis will naturally cause serious turbulence, changes in the family atmosphere, and the outbreak of conflicts that have existed for a long time.

The theme of the movie is to narrate that the seemingly stable family relationship is actually fragile. I think that the success of gay relationships must go through deeper thinking and discussion between both parties. After all, it is rare to hear about gay couples getting married in a flash. Is there a second source of law for gay marriage, but does the gay relationship need to be included in the secular concept of marriage? Nic and Jules have been in a family for at least eighteen years. They are not a confused couple, and their lives should be run-in for more than ten years. It almost fell apart because of Paul's intervention. Why? It's definitely not because Jules needs men, and children need fathers. In the relationship, Nic is on the strong side, whether for his lover Jules or a pair of children. But Paul's personality is not like that. He will affirm Jules and respect Joni and Laser. Perhaps Paul is at a different psychological stage from Nic. Nic, the head of the family, is at ease in a long-term and stable relationship, and Paul has just turned from a stranger to a mature friend. It is also because of the distance that he can appreciate the members of the family more.

Everything is not without a trace, but the daily life that is so accustomed to it has become the most damn cover.

Laser: I don't think you guys should break up.

    Nic: No? Why's that?

Laser: I think you're too old.

    Nic: [wryly] Thanks, Laser.

[Jules grins and puts a hand on Nic's knee, and Nic covers the hand with her own]

  • Paul: Just making an ob... observation.

Nic: Yeah? Well, I need your observations like I need a dick in my ass!
