1981 Inescapable Summer

"I want to escape from all the pain and sorrow in this world, and those endless sufferings, and I pray with all my heart to God, let us two like good angels fly into the sky until they disappear."

This is what Neil said at the end of the film when he was holding a choking Brain. The air was filled with the smell of Brain's nosebleed, mixed with the sweetness of Christmas Eve candy. At that moment, the two children looked directly at the nightmare of 1981 together for the first time. At that moment, they really grew up. The childhood that was coming to an end in the summer could not be erased, but it finally stopped lingering.

The heartache brought to me by the movie is not only because of what happened to the two children, but also because of what happened to Neil and Brain when they grew up. Before the two met, Neil was still looking for someone who regarded himself as an angel. Brain was still dreaming about that icy blue Halloween dream, and it seemed like there was no end to it.

This kind of blurred grief cannot be separated from the atmosphere created by the director's excellent soundtrack.

The scene where Neil lay on Wendy's lap and smoked after he arrived in New York was Dagger from Slowdive

"The world is full of noise yeah, I hear it all the time, You know I am your dagger, You know I am your wound..."

The psychedelic nihilistic shoe-staring rock and Neil's bewildered mood are a perfect match.

It ends with Samskeyti from Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós, with Neil and Brain fading away, leaving only the noisy old TV of the 80s, colorful cereal, catchy video games and the end of the summer of 1981. gust of wind.
