"The Listening Girl" is a remake of the original film "The Belliers".
In order to remake the film, Apple TV+ spent $25 million to buy the copyright of the film.
Good thing I didn't screw it up...
Not only has a good reputation, but also won three awards at this year's Sundance Film Festival: the Jury Award, the Audience Award and the Director Award.
The protagonist of the story is a high school girl with healthy hearing, Ruby.
Having healthy hearing is a normal thing for most people, but it is a luxury for deaf people.
The reason for special emphasis on hearing is because Ruby was born into a deaf family and was the only member of it who had hearing.
Every day, she helps her deaf parents and brother manage the fishing business. She has to get up at three in the morning when she goes out fishing, and she has to rush to class after a few hours of work.
Ruby, who was overwhelmed by her body, was often late and couldn't keep up her spirits in class. She slept all the time, and her grades were poor, and she never thought of going to college.
Not only that, she came from a deaf-mute family and was ridiculed at school. There were always people mocking her for her fishy smell, and even more maliciously smeared and imitated Ruby's parents' sign language.
On the one hand, there was discrimination from her classmates at school, and on the other hand, there were all kinds of noises in the house that only she could hear. Ruby felt that she was excluded from both parties, and the only way to relieve stress was to sing.
She likes to sing, but she doesn't know how well she sings, and she has no one to share with.
Just as the club was recruiting new members, she joined the chorus with the male god Miles.
However, the long-term low self-esteem made her dare not sing in front of everyone, so that she ran away in the first class.
Fortunately, she met Mr.V.
The discerning teacher noticed her singing talent, encouraged her to sing bravely step by step, and arranged for her to practice duets with Miles.
Mr.V believes that with Ruby's singing voice, he can go to Berklee College of Music for further study, and is willing to tutor her for free.
But Berkeley is far away in Boston, and going to college means Ruby has to leave the family.
However, leaving home is not an easy task.
As far as the family is concerned, the parents' fish business has just picked up, and they need Ruby as a "translator" to better communicate with other normal people;
As far as Ruby is concerned, she has never done anything away from her family, and she is also afraid that she will not succeed.
After being late for the fourth music tutoring, Mr.V finally couldn't bear it anymore and asked Ruby to make a choice between her music dream and her family.
As for Ruby's final decision, I won't spoil it first, and the core of the movie is not Ruby's decision.
"Hearing Girl" focuses on a special group - the deaf and dumb, but it does not deliberately provocative.
Instead, he found a special perspective, and presented the conflicts between dreams and reality, the inferiority complex and bravery in growing up, and the unavoidable communication barriers between deaf parents and able-bodied children in a warm-hearted way.
There are two such clips in the movie.
The first is that Ruby's father learned that his daughter sang very nicely, and he wanted to hear it for himself, but he couldn't.
So he chose to touch Ruby's neck and feel the ups and downs of her soundtrack when she sang. The father and daughter were speechless, but all the love was contained in it.
The second is when Ruby was on stage to sing, her parents and brother secretly ran to the second floor to cheer her on. Ruby sang while she sang her sign language. In this way, the family "listened" to her singing, and the people closest to her were able to sing. Can also share her joy.
In addition, there are no facialized characters in the whole movie at all, and each protagonist has a particularly distinctive image, which makes people feel a warm current in their hearts while smiling knowingly.
Ruby's father started out as a greasy, erotic, greasy man.
However, his "lust" is always only for his wife, and he is not stingy with all kinds of praise.
After discovering that his daughter is really musical and talented, he was also the first to stand up for her daughter.
Ruby's mother always objected to Ruby's desire to go to the conservatory. Everyone thought she wanted Ruby to help the family, but in fact she was just worried that her daughter would be sad if she failed,
At first, I expected Ruby to be deaf, but she was just worried that her flaws would make it difficult to get close to her daughter. She is also a loving mother who hopes that her daughter can always be happy.
Brother Ruby always felt sorry for his younger sister. Even though he was a brother, he kept Ruby under pressure, so he firmly opposed Ruby staying at home.
In order to adapt to the life of dealing with normal people as soon as possible, he forced himself to participate in a wine party that he did not understand at all.
Knowing that the other party deducted the price of his own fish, he would rather try to use sign language to argue for reasons than to ask his sister to help.
There is also Ruby's male god, the two of them went to Ruby's house to practice songs, and singing this back-to-back was quite a feeling.
But not long after practice, the voice of Ruby's parents exercising came from next door. Miles didn't think it was embarrassing or shameful, but envied the atmosphere of their home.
As a result, I inadvertently told my friends, and my friends spread it out. Everyone started laughing at Ruby, and Ruby ignored Miles in a fit of rage.
Miles apologized in various ways, and said "I'll text you every few minutes until you agree to play with me", which is a bit naive, but it is especially cute and sincere.
Therefore, these two people also have all kinds of candy...
However, the dean's favorite is Mr.V. He is a good teacher that can't be found.
Knowing that Ruby didn't dare to sing in front of people, she simply asked everyone to practice puppy vocalization and make a fool of herself to eliminate Ruby's inferiority complex.
Never laughing at Ruby's pronunciation, but encouraging her to make a sound she thinks is unpleasant to stimulate her potential.
When Ruby went to the audition and forgot to bring her sheet music, Mr.V came to accompany her again. Seeing that she was not in the state, she deliberately played the wrong note to give Ruby a second chance to sing.
Of course, the intention of the film is more than that, and when Ruby sings, there is a special silent segment, allowing the audience to experience everything that the deaf and dumb can feel.
The applause, laughter and moving songs around you can't be heard. You can only make judgments based on people's reactions. I have to say that this is really too delicate.
In general, "Listening Girl" can be regarded as a relatively high-quality and unconventional youth healing film recently.
It is very suitable for watching when you are in a setback or in a bad mood. I believe that you will be touched by some point in it.
Upvoting is a good habit!
