Today, let's talk about the movie "Togo".
Title Togo / Togo: The Untold True Story (2019).
The film "Togo" is adapted from the real historical event "1925 Serum Relay", which tells the story of a group of sled dogs headed by Togo saving a large group of children.
This relay run is called the "Great Race of Mercy" in the United States.
At the end of 1924, a 2-year-old child in the small town of Nome, Alaska, suddenly fell ill. The doctor diagnosed tonsillitis and did not take it seriously. But with a snap, soon, more and more children in the town suffered from this "tonsillitis", and several children even died unfortunately. In the end, doctors diagnosed the infectious disease as diphtheria. At that time, there was only one vaccine on the market to deal with diphtheria, but the vaccines in the town were all expired, and these children could live only if new vaccines were sent.
It was winter at that time, and the road was blocked by heavy snow, so planes and cars could not reach the town, so they could only rely on sled dogs for postal transportation. The town decided to arrange two groups of sled dogs for relay transportation, with 20 sled drivers and 150 sled dogs traveling day and night to start this life-and-death rescue.
Norwegian sled master Leonhard Seppala was tasked with taking on the daunting task.
The leading sled dog in his team is Togo, a legendary sled dog.
The nearest vaccine site is 1,085 kilometers away from the town of Nome, and sled dogs usually need to run for 25 days. Togo took his mates to complete the relay run in five and a half days in the severe weather of minus 30 degrees and strong winds above level 7, overcoming the weather, overcoming time, and saving the lives of many children .
There is always a leading role in making a movie, and of course such a famous event also has to have a suitable role to play the leading role. The protagonist here is Togo.
Togo is gifted and capable, showing extraordinary abilities and qualities since childhood, and soon grew into a leading dog.
Because Togo was small at birth, Sepala didn't think he would make a good sled dog. Fortunately, Togo has proved his ability and intelligence with his actions time and time again, which made Sepala impressed. Separa then named Togo after the Japanese Admiral Admiral Togo Heihachiro.
Heihachiro Togo is a Japanese admiral and a marquis, and is also called the "God of War" of Japanese militarism along with Nogi Nogi of the Army. In the naval battle of Tsushima Strait, he led the Japanese navy to defeat the Russian navy, which became a precedent for the eastern yellow race to defeat the western white race in modern history, and earned him the reputation of "Oriental Nelson". This shows Togo's status in Seppara's heart.
In 2011, Time magazine named Togo "The Most Heroic Animal of All Time".
In fact, in 1995, the cartoon "Balto" (Balto, 1995) told the same story.
Togo was the lead sled dog for the entire journey, while Barto completed the final leg but took most of the credit.
Now that Disney is remaking the live-action film, it's starting to focus more on Togo, the mainstay of the journey.
Togo dropped the tip of his right ear.
It is generally believed that when it was a puppy, it teased the Eskimo and was bitten by a big dog.
However, these scars do not appear in the film, and can be seen in the final egg photo of the film.
In order to highlight the danger of this serum relay run, this film arranged a lot of hardships for the Togo team. Nearly two hours long, with a lot of aerial and sinister footage, you can only have one feeling: Disney is really rich.
But in fact, the serum relay run did not have much impact on Togo.
The truth is, on the way back to town, Togo and two other dogs managed to break free from their reins and start chasing the reindeer. One of the dogs soon returned, while Togo and the other disappeared into the forest.
Separa tried her best to find it but couldn't find it, and finally returned to the town of Nome on February 4. A week later, it was the postman who drove Togo back.
Togo died in 1929 at the age of 16. For dogs, a 16-year-old dog is the equivalent of an old man. In Togo's later years, its main task is to walk and breed.
Togo isn't the longest-lived dog on the Sepala Serum Relay team, though. The oldest dog was Fritz, who co-led the team with Togo, who died in 1932 at the age of 18.
Another excellent film about sled dogs in recent years is "The Call of the Wild" (2020), which is also a story about a dog growing into the strongest sled dog.
Interested viewers can take a look together.
Such a feat is not accomplished by a single person or a dog, but a joint effort of a group of people and a team.
During the first relay run, when the serum pack contained only 30 doses of serum, there were already 28 cases of diphtheria in children and adults, and new cases continued to emerge. So a week later, on February 8, more than two dozen bobsledders went on a relay, with Balto, Carson, Sepra and Togo not participating in the second round of elections.
The second relay took 36 hours longer to complete than the first.
Because Balto was the last dog to complete the relay, people built a statue. People don't just commemorate Barto, but all the people and dogs in the Serum Relay.
The strongest king of sled dogs,
Battle wind and snow create a legend.
