There has never been any film that made me cry silently in the first minute, and "The Salt of the Earth" did it; there has never been any film that made me still shocked after watching it multiple times, and "The Salt of the Earth" did it; Never before has any film made me feel pained by something thousands of miles away, and Salt of the Earth did. When photographer Sebastian used his lens to present another era, another country, and another group of people in front of me, I deeply felt that I was no longer an individual, no longer belonged only to a certain country or group, No longer stay out of the way of things on the other side of the earth, but as a member of all human beings, talk to Sebastian, and talk to the people of the other world. I can't forget that in a huge gold mine in Serra Pelada, Brazil, people are like ant colonies, willing to risk their lives just to find a grain of gold, day after day, among them, there are merchants, farmers, some College students; I can’t forget that during the great famine in Ethiopia, countless people were concentrated in refugee camps by the government, bright-eyed but scrawny children, the only thing they could do was wait for the light in their eyes to go out, only because the government controlled their Food; I can't forget the fires of Kuwait's oil fields, people can still move in exile, and animals have nowhere to run, for them this is the only home; I can't forget the genocide in Rwanda, walking alone in the fields, Beside him, there are piles of corpses, hatred is like wildfire, igniting the extreme violence of people; I can't forget Sebastian's eyes, he looks at the camera, like looking at another time and space, he looks at I, looking at the originator of all this, he said to me: My soul is sick...I can no longer believe in anything, I can't believe in any human redemption, we are not worth living, no one is worth living, how many times have I let go Camera, cry for what I saw... In the Bible, Job asked God in pain for the answer to why he suffered so much, but God warned him not to speculate on God's will, and all Job could do was pray; Moses led the people into exile for forty years before finally reaching the Promised Land, and all they could do was wait. The proverbs of God at this time are more like a ruthless deception. People who have experienced hardships are content with it. They believe and can only believe that God can ultimately bring salvation. People lose all hope when they ask God to be their last hope.

What should people do?

What makes people crazy about gold? What makes politics a hand for manipulating human life? What makes nature's thousands of creatures homeless? What makes people of the same skin color kill each other just because of different surnames? I asked Sebastian, Sebastian looked at me, he didn't say anything, I suddenly knew the answer to all this, the answer, in you, in me, in everyone. You, I, all, are born with the seeds of sin, and no one is innocent. When I told Sebastian about the idea, he took me back to his hometown. This is a green field, and Sebastian has planted trees here, and he has turned a wilderness into a green field. He looked at me and said slowly: This land has been telling our story, it has witnessed my childhood, accompanied my old age, and when I die, this forest will return to the way I was born. The state, the whole cycle is complete, this is the story of my life... After I listened to him, I looked at this green, looked into Sebastian's eyes, his eyes were no longer heavy, his eyes were full of birds The fluttering wings are filled with the last wind blowing away the white clouds, the veins and shades of the big trees, and the only blessing the earth has given to mankind. Sebastian has found the habitat of his soul. Finally, I said goodbye to Sebastian, people and animals in different time and space, but I know that I will not be far away from them, but will become closer day by day. In fact, I live in the same time and space as them, and their stories are played out every day, and even happen to me. I can hear the clanking of money in my soul, I can see the anger and hatred towards someone in my eyes, I can feel my narrow-mindedness, selfishness, and helplessness. This is their story, this is my story. But, Sebastian, you have found your salvation, what about me, what about us?

The Salt of the Earth quotes

  • Sebastião Salgado - Photographer: We are a ferocious animal. We humans are terrible animals. Our history is a history of wars. It's an endless story, a tale of madness.

  • Sebastião Salgado - Photographer: To think that these three-month-old trees will reach their apex in 400 years. Perhaps from there we could try to grasp the concept of eternity. Maybe eternity is measurable.
