The questionable "Silk"

To be honest, "Silk" reminds me of "The Painted Veil" unexpectedly: it is also the story of Westerners entering a "mysterious" eastern country; whether it is "France" or "Japan", the scenery is really good, But the plot tension is too weak.

To put it simply, the story is about the male protagonist who leaves his new wife and travels across the ocean, and goes into the country-locked Japan to find silkworm eggs. I know it well... Originally the story was good, but the movie brought me a lot of question marks.

First of all, why is the hero Hervé obsessed with the woman next to the boss? Is it just because she drank his tea? If Hervé has always been single-minded, and the "concubine" who fell in love with the leader was only confused for a while, then why did he "not refuse" the woman sent by the concubine? Also, what happened to that concubine? (Perhaps the leader saw Hervé's unreasonable thoughts about his concubine, so he rectified her on the spot?)

And although his wife Hélène knew that her husband was hiding something, how could she know that it was related to the leader's concubine? (Probably a woman's intuition!) And how would she know to write to that Madam Blanche?

The worst thing to see is the tipping off about the child's death. What did the leader think? If the leader was fleeing to avoid Hervé, then killing the collaborating child would make sense, but it wasn't. (Although the child's "corpse" is terrifying, it's a bit fake, so you can't help but see that it's a prop!)

All in all, the film seems to say that men will never cherish what they have. "A wife is not as good as a concubine, a concubine is not as good as stealing, and a stealing is not as good as not stealing." Hélène is a "wife", and the leader's concubine is considered "unable to steal". Hervé's obsession with it seems to indirectly make Hélène exhausted and die prematurely.

how to say? It feels weird. It seems that there is an expression of intention first, and then there is a whim.

Hervé Joncour: Steaming water. Strange trees. Laughing children. Her skin... those eyes. But why should I tell you about it? Why now? Maybe I just need to tell someone about it. And that someone is you.
