A civilized and barbaric era

There are always two words engraved in my heart when watching this kind of movie: sad

William took the "symbol of civilization" - a train, traveled thousands of miles to find employment, but was driven out of the door by the boss at gunpoint. This is a sad era of indifference and chaos; a talented woman has a one-night stand but has no intention to provoke the boss's son, two deaths and one injury , the wounded had "unnecessary" on their backs. The boss directly offered a bounty to the whole town regardless of the 3721. The wanted order was even posted in the depths of the jungle, and then a group of hunters sacrificed their lives for this. This is an irrational blind man Sad times.

And this kind of blind, chaotic, irrational and sad society ultimately poisons all the people who live in it. Take bounty hunters, who seem to live in a civilized world, but go deep into the jungle for blindly wrong purposes. Then there were all kinds of bizarre methods of death, those who were shot by Indians, those who were accidentally killed by accomplices, and those whose heads were crushed. Their souls just die blindly in these chaotic times... sad indeed.

Personally, I think the Chinese name of this movie is very good. William seemed to come from a true civilization, with soft hair in a glasses suit and a gentleman's tone. But as a "foreign guest", he experienced such a series of barbaric stories. From the first bullet that hit his heart, he gradually began to "leave his soul" in pain. From the "I insist, I will" he muttered when he was alone in the jungle, to the "yes, I am. Do you know my poetry?" when confronted by the bounty hunter and then shot without hesitation. This is the "departure" of his soul.

There are some interesting details. In the chat between William and Nobody, the words "you" and "me" were hardly used, but they were always called "William Blake". In William's mind, the meaning of the name is constantly changing. Originally it was referring to himself. From his anger and helplessness when he saw his wanted order to his murder without blinking, his soul's "away" became farther and farther, so later on, his meaning of the name gradually became blurred. , so that in the end he almost acquiesced himself to the poet "William Blake", looking for a new home for the new soul in the lonely boat - "mirror of water".

A new home for the "new" soul

There is also an interesting point, what people in civilized society call "symbols of barbarism" - all the actions of the Indians in the whole event are directly or indirectly helping William. Whether it was accidentally killing the bounty hunter by mistake, or finally helping William heal his gunshot wound, and Nobody and the bounty hunter who still came blindly and so on.

Of course, it is also very interesting to ponder the details such as tobacco. After watching the movie anyway, my expression was the same as Depp on the last boat.

Confused, thoughtful, seems to understand a lot

[7.0] The rhythm is very slow, but the photography is in the style of old Japanese films, dead, powerful and poetic. Jarmusch is really a very thoughtful director. The conflict between modern times and primitive civilizations is reminiscent of "Apocalypse Now", and even the direction of the plot is very similar.

Jarmusch's imagery is too strong, but the metaphors about Indians and life and death... I don't understand American native culture, so I'm always a little confused.

Dead Man quotes

  • Nobody: The vision of Christ that thou dost see, is my vision's greatest enemy.

  • Train Fireman: That doesn't explain why you've come all the way out here... all the way out here to hell.
