"Ivan's Childhood" won the Best Director Award at the 1962 San Francisco International Film Festival and the 1962 Venice Film Festival Golden Lion Award. His debut film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and in 1962 the young Soviet director Tarkovsky became famous. Real time and space and non-real time and space constitute the narrative structure of "Ivan's Childhood". There is a chemical reaction between the narrative state of real time and space and the mental space of non-real time and space. Whether the dream was a real existence or Ivan’s subconscious imagination when he let go of his tense emotions, there is no simple treatment. It is a causal relationship, but leaves room for the audience to think. 5 non-real time and space, 3 of which are dreams. The sun is shining, the picture is soft, behind the swaying branches and leaves, little Ivan's face is blurred with light and shadow.

From Ivan looking at the sun to running with his back to his mother, and his mother watching Ivan drinking water - there are a total of four shots, and the subjective and objective perspectives are arbitrarily switched.

The film begins in such a visual environment. Ivan, who is in the countryside and laughing, flies freely without hindrance, which constitutes the visual characteristics of the film's "dream" space and time.

Ivan's Childhood quotes

  • Ivan's Mother: If a well is really deep, you can see a star down there even in the middle of a sunny day.

  • Ivan: Is he a Fritz too?

Galtsev: He's either a German doctor or writer.

Ivan: They have no writers. I saw them burning books in a square. They poured gasoline on them and set them on fire. There was soot in the air for a week.

Galtsev: That writer lived 400 years ago.

    Ivan: Well, then maybe.
