Probably give a 3.5 stars, mainly for painting.
The painting is amazing, I especially like this old-fashioned art style, don't abuse perspective and deformation, and use 3D to 2D sneakily with restraint, very refreshing and smooth.
But when it comes to storytelling, it’s not so optimistic.
Similar to Metropolis and Wang Li Universe Army, such big boy directors are not careful, and they are not restricted by their deputy, and it is easy to fall into self-indulgence. There are relatively big problems with the plot of the film. Personally, I think the main problem is that the motives of the protagonists are not clear. The war from the two factions, the contradiction between the grandfather and the grandson, including the take-off, destruction, and explosion of the steam city, all lack the necessary necessity. You can snatch the steam ball, create a steam city, and of course you can start the steam city, but the opposition between the several factions is not so sharp that it is absolutely necessary. There is room for compromise between these things, which makes The second half of the war was hilarious.
The other is the climax of the film. The setting of Steam City is indeed a bit unsustainable. From an artistic point of view, this big iron bell is extremely unfortunate. Compared with Howl's Moving Castle, this iron knot is complicated and difficult to understand, and it lacks the point of attracting audiences. There are already many works of steampunk, and Steam City must be a rather boring one among them. If the characters can give Steam a certain connotation of value, that's one way. But the result of the film is that Steam City seems to be a product of personal paranoia (like a tin house in a slum), especially after the Steam City is forcibly started (for no reason) and kills hundreds of civilians, making it difficult for the audience to have a sense of substitution, or even live Tired.
Finally, when it comes to shaping the protagonist team, first of all, you are not afraid of steam. Grandpa and father don't talk about it, just be two lunatics. The consortium is also a super nerve, and let the decoration workers under them secretly build the Forbidden City after get off work. The heroine can be considered a bright color, but if you think about it carefully, she is a person who has no position at all. It is her family's property that has been destroyed. In the end, the judicial liquidation will also require their family to wipe their butts. Brainless sticking to the female image of the male protagonist. All kinds of illogical behaviors cannot be forced to explain the past with an arrogant attribute. As for the male protagonist, a tool man who is not successful, a genius inventor who is very traditional and royal, you don't have to worry about his fate at all.
Finally, in the subtitle part, a few illustrations are used to greatly expand the pattern of the film. Although the electrical age and the internal combustion engine age alternately appear, I am a little bit confused, but still praised.
All in all, I think the director can do better.
