A director who always feels that he can convey his ideas through a film in a limited time is a level higher than those who have made an excellent script with a completed script. For example, this "Mad Men Pierrot" is adapted from a novel, but the story itself is not important to Godard, what is important is the emotion it conveys. Through a crazy story of the hero and heroine, Godard successfully completed his autobiography of love. 1. Expressionist methods are used in many scenes in expressionist films. For example, in the rooms of the male and female protagonists, the walls are simple white, and the indoor furniture is not enough for living. The advantage of this is that the audience's attention can be focused on the protagonist and other necessary items. The paintings hanging on the wall describe the psychological state of the male and female protagonists at that time, and the weapons indicate that the male and female protagonists are about to start a life of murder and desperation. Two flashing neon lights hang on the car where the hero and heroine first met, symbolizing the beginning of a dreamlike life. The movie uses fireworks, paintings, and light signs as transitions, and in the process of transitioning, the male and female main characters are added to read poems as narration. In addition to hinting at the theme of the next episode, it also represents the change in the emotional state of the male and female main characters.
All the violent scenes are followed by paintings by artists such as Picasso, which also allow the audience to experience the same effect without appearing violent.
The nature of the film
At the beginning of the movie, when the male protagonist is attending a banquet, the color of the lens switches between red, green and blue successively. In addition to having the role that classical cinema used to represent different atmospheres, it also shows us that cinema is composed of these three primary colors.
The great director of the cameo showed us the essence of the movie: the movie is the battlefield, love, hatred, action, violence, death, in one word, emotion. Movies are actually the embodiment of human emotions. The film also shows us Godard's emotions: love for his wife and desperation for eventual separation.
Later, the male protagonist said that he was tired. He used his eyes to see pictures, his ears to listen to voices, and his mouth to speak. Now everything is out of harmony. This is telling us that a movie is a comprehensive art of image, sound, and lines, and the coordination of the three can make an excellent movie.
In the car, the heroine said to the hero: life is completely different from books, books are clear, logical, and orderly, but life is not like this. This sentence reveals to us another essence of film, which is to simplify life, to become clear, logical and orderly.
Later, the male protagonist pretended to be an old grandfather and said: He wants to create a work that does not describe people's lives, but describes life itself, including space, sound, and color. In fact, it was Godard's confession that he was going to start creating films that portrayed the film itself.
3. Political metaphors
When the hostess was in the car, she heard the broadcast say: 115 Viet Cong died, and said angrily that they didn't even have a name. They are also flesh and blood people and have their own lives. Expresses the author's anger at the US aggression against Vietnam.
The male protagonist told the female protagonist the story of a man on the moon, expressing Godard's mockery of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
In the most exciting part, the hero and heroine perform the Vietnam War in order to raise money. The battle between the American soldier played by the hero and the Vietnamese girl directly expresses Godard's irony of the Vietnam War.
The autobiography of love
As I said at the beginning, the plot itself is not important, what matters is the emotion conveyed by the director, which is the essence of the film.
The relationship between the male and female protagonists in the film has undergone several changes in total, and poems are interspersed between each change.
1. The male and female protagonists met at the banquet and established their relationship in the car on the way back. The male protagonist likes the female protagonist because she doesn't like to tell her own story and thinks she is very mysterious. The female protagonist is called the male protagonist Pierrot (a famous gangster), which shows that the female protagonist greatly admires the male protagonist. This is also the reason why Godard fell in love with the heroine and his wife Anna, who Godard thought was mysterious, and Anna admired Godard as a director.
2. The two began to live together, but the male protagonist suspected that the female protagonist was cheating and had an improper relationship with Frank. After that they rob Frank and start a life of desperation. During this period, Godard and Anna began a period of love.
3. The male protagonist is madly infatuated with the female protagonist's body. He said that men on the moon will definitely like the female protagonist's long legs and crisp breasts, and also praised her hip line. The two have crazy love on the beach. This is Godard expressing to the audience that when he first fell in love with Anna, it was largely because of her physical infatuation.
4. The two began a life of seclusion. The male protagonist began to write poems. The female protagonist wanted to pursue excitement and could not stand the boredom of seaside life. The two began to divide their lives. The male protagonist likes literature, and the female protagonist likes music. This is the difference of hobbies. This period is after Godard's marriage entered a stable period, and Anna and Anna's attitude towards life, hobbies and other aspects appeared contradictory, and each other began to not understand each other's behavior.
5. Disagreement brings despair, each other does not understand each other's behavior, and heralds the separation of two people. The marriage between the two began to break down.
6. The male protagonist and the female protagonist separated for the first time. The male protagonist went to the train track to lie down on the track, but finally escaped. At this time, Godard should have been separated from Anna for a short time because of differences in life. He was desperate and even wanted to end his own life.
7. The male protagonist started frantically looking for the female protagonist, and finally she found the female protagonist. The female protagonist wants to do a big job, but the male protagonist wants to keep her and tell her that the two of them together, even if it is plain, is life. But the female protagonist is indifferent, and the male protagonist can only act with her. This paragraph of Godard should be reuniting with Anna. He still wants to adapt the other party's attitude towards life, but it has no effect.
8. The female protagonist betrayed the male protagonist and was with other men with money. It symbolizes that the relationship between the two people has been completely irreparable, and Anna's heart is no longer on Godard.
9. The male protagonist shot the man and the female protagonist and killed himself with explosives. This is Godard's revenge, revenge on the man (probably doesn't exist) and on Anna, who killed his inner Anna. The final suicide conveyed the despair in his heart again.
A year later, he and Anna divorced. He really once loved her deeply and experienced the despair of losing her. Since then, his films have also changed, not focusing on love and starting to show us the film itself.
