The overall style of the film is bland and mostly narrative. When I thought the movie was finally going to start with another story, it ended suddenly...I personally feel that this movie is about three generations of different perceptions of a new environment. Everyone may have a different understanding after reading it.
three generations
This generation of parents is the backbone of the family. Young parents are also ambitious and motivated young people. While they embraced American culture, they also retained a large part of Korean culture. This can be seen from the plants that the male protagonist planted at the beginning and the punishment his son gave to "Korean smell".
The generation of children is the hope of the family. They were totally immersed in and at the same time receptive to American culture. They are confused and do not understand the living habits and attitudes of grandma's generation.
The grandmother generation is the support of the family. She has a Korean heart. She didn't fit into American culture. She tried to understand American culture in a way she could understand. Grandma is a very interesting person. The gift she brought to her daughter-in-law when she met her was chili powder with Korean characteristics; she brought "Bumping Soup" and "Korean Poker?" to her grandson. Ha ha ha ha.
plant Corps
Growing crops is the main thread of the story. The whole story is pretty much about how Dad struggled to get the crops up. There is a branch where grandma sprinkles Minari seeds along the water stream.
Dad has a few interesting settings when he grows crops. First, Dad likes to do it himself, and he will tacitly refuse the help of others. Unless it's posted by someone like Paul, lol. Second, when my father faced a water crisis while growing crops in Korea, he finally had to connect to the water source provided by the local government. The idea of free water that Dad mentioned earlier here has been wiped out. This is the first time Dad has to compromise. Third, California didn't need Dad's Korean crops, which ruined his plans. He started growing American food so that he could support his family. Interestingly, I remember when he prepared the first fruit and vegetable samples, he put in the first Korean fruit and vegetables he planted. It can be imagined that his obsession is still there, but he has a better harmony with reality. Fourth, Dad finally regained free water with the help of others. The film clearly depicts the water from the faucet from turbid with red mud to the final clear. This is Dad's character compromise on life.
Grandma's cress spur. Grandma and grandson were the only pair who knew about cress. The grandmother said to her grandson, "cress is suitable for growing in places with abundant water sources. There are various ways of cress." At the end of the story, the grandson also told his father. Although grandma was not familiar with America, her life experience taught her the most practical way. The cress branch in the story is as underappreciated as grandma's status in the family. Interestingly, the last scene of the story turned out to be cress. Throughout the story, there is little interaction between the father, mother, granddaughter and grandma. The grandson was the only one who had to interact with the grandma. At the same time, grandson is also the first person to understand grandma. His first identification with his grandmother was in church. At that time, my father gave a donation of 100 dollars, which was then taken back by my grandmother. On the way back, my mother felt that my father gave too much money and was a little worried. After meeting his grandmother's eyes, the grandson, who saw everything in his eyes, began to form a hazy good impression of his grandmother.
Finally, just as the first harvest was about to bring new hope to the family, a fire burned their vision. That is, at this moment, the cress branch was officially displayed in front of Dad and the audience for the first time. I believe, this has sparked new hope for the whole family.
About the cress, my grandmother only told her grandson. I think it might be because grandma felt grandson was the one most likely to understand her. As he wished, the grandson was also the one who brought Dad to the cress bush.
heart disease
Mothers and grandmothers dealt very differently with their son's heart disease. The mother will try her best to protect her son and prevent him from exercising; the grandmother will let her grandson move appropriately. At this point, grandma made the most correct decision again. To be honest, I was actually sweating. This setting reminds me of "The Last Farewell". somewhat similar.
Grandma and Culture
Grandma has been influenced by Korean culture all the year round, but also loves Korean culture. Once at dinner, my grandmother saw a Korean song and dance program on TV and told the couple with great interest. But Mom and Dad were not very interested in it. Meanwhile, Grandma is embracing the new culture in her own way. Once, grandma drank a mouthful of boy urine. She was watching American Boxing with gusto at the time.
There are several other places in the film about different attempts at culture. One day, my son stayed at a classmate's house for boarding, and the classmate showed him cowboy style, strange candy... He taught his classmate to play "Korean poker". After the two people communicated, they were very happy to accept each other's culture. Another is to get to know more people, the whole family goes to church. The interesting thing here is Paul. Paul said "This is my church. I need to do that. Just let me finish.". I think Paul's example is to tell you that the choices we make should not be mere formality. Some people go to church instead of worship. Some people do not go to church but also worship. To be honest, I thought Paul was a little crazy at first...
prayers and blessings
There are two people in the play who used to pray and bless. One is Paul. Paul this person is really super devoutly blessing, once made me wonder if this person is sick....The other is grandma. Grandma used to sing the song of Minari, hugged her grandson and wished him all the time. Their blessings were fulfilled. This is definitely what the plot needs. Let's look at the attitude of the blessed. Paul's blessing is the Li family. Dad didn't care much about Paul's prayers. Grandson's blessing to grandma, sleep soundly, here I acquiesce he accepted. Although I have no interest in religion, I have always embraced the prayers and blessings of others. This is different from me in the past. Be happy for yourself.
postscript
If it weren't for apartment warming watching it with a group of people, I probably wouldn't have chosen to watch this movie. This reminds me of an idea I had in high school, why not make a movie about the lives of ordinary people? Now filming, I almost fell asleep, ah ah ah ha ha ha ha ha.
